Sprague Familiy of the Mid Ohio Valley

I have been researching the Sprague family that was in the Spraguetown area of Sussex County New Jersey as early as 1765. This family left New Jersey @ 1790 and was in Washington County Pa. in 1792 and was in Wheeling (Ohio County) Va.(now W.Va.) by 1795. A tax list in Ohio County for the year 1795 shows the following names; Stephen Sprague Sr.; Stephen Sprague Jr.; Ebenezer; Benjamin; and Randall Sprague. The Sprague family moved to Jefferson County Ohio in 1798 according to local history books. Stephen Sprague Sr., Stephen Jr.,and Ebenezer Sprague appear on a tax list in that county in the year 1810.
Benjamin Sprague (my 4th great grandfather) was born in New Jersey according to the 1850 census. He married Sussannah Leatherman, daughter of Frederick Leatherman,probably in Washington County Pa.. In 1816 Benjamin Sprague purchased 80 acres of land in Smith TWP. Belmont County Ohio.
In 1910,Warren V. Sprague wrote a book called "Sprague Families In America". In his book,page 521, Mr.Sprague mentions the parents names of Benjamin Sprague (wife Sussannah Leatherman)as being Benjamin and Catherine Sprague. I believe that this information is wrong and that Warren Sprague printed unproven information. I feel that Mr. Sprague somehow concluded that Benjamin and Catherine(Harshman) "Spriggs",who lived in the neighboring TWP of Goshen,Belmont County Ohio,was the father of Benjamin Sprague and then printed it as fact. The Benjamin Spriggs line is well documented and is not related to the Sprague family of Belmont County Ohio. The same misinformation printed in "Sprague Families In America" is also the same information that can be found at the Sprague Data Base.
The purpose of my research and this web page is to encourage researchers of this line to prove or disprove page 521 of "Sprague Families In America". My personal theory is that Stephen Sprague Sr. is the correct name of my 5th great grandfather. Many bits of information point toward him as being the father of Benjamin Sprague (wife Sussannah),but as yet it is unproven.
