Hello: I am researching my family's roots. The surname is Hryhorchuk and was changed to Ryhorchuk. My Grandfather Petro (Peter) Hryhorchuk immigrated to Canada in 1897 from Novosilka, Kostiukova, district Zalishchyky, Galicia, Western Ukraine. (at that time under Austrian rule) boarded the S.S. Scotia in Hamburg, Germany on April 15, and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia April 30, 1897, and homesteaded in Sifton, Manitoba. Petro settled in Sifton, Manitoba with his wife Jerena (Irene Kindrat) two sons John and William. A 3rd son Fredrick was born in 1899. Irene passed away shortly thereafter and Petro remarried in 1902 to Annie Basarba (Bassaraba) and they had 10 more sons, Mike, Nick, Matt, Andy, Alex, Peter, Steve, Leo, Fred, Paul, and one daughter. Mary. As well as homesteading Petro worked for Canadian National Railways starting a Ryhorchuk tradition. All thirteen of his sons joined Canadian National Railways, a family record claimed to be unique. Total service exceeds 400 years and is listed in the Guiness World Book of Records and Ripleys Believe it or not. There also was a Wasyl (William)Hryhorchuk who arrived in Canada on the S.S. Italia in Halifax on June 3, 1998, settling in Valley River, Manitoba, as well as another Petro Hryhorchuk in 1898, settling in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, and I am trying to tie these two into the family relationship, as they also immigrated with their families from the same village in Western Ukraine. To date I have no further information. There also has been several spellings of the surname as follows: Hryhorczuk, (Ryhorczuk) Hrehirchuk (Rehirchuk) Hrehortchuk, (Rehortchuk) Hruhorchuk (Ruhorchuk) Any or all of these spelling may be related. Anyone willing to pass information along would be greatly appreciated. Angie |
