| Hello kinfolks all and welcome to my homepage... I have been active in family research for several years,for me, it all began many years ago,while sitting around the old log fireplace,at the home of my grandfather Perry, "pip" Spurlock, listening to him tell stories about family and kinfolk,and about his life in general,growing up and living in rural Eastern Kentucky,on the head of Buffalo Creek, Owsley County...Grandmother Marinda, "mamaw" Bishop Spurlock would make fresh popcorn,and we would bake potatoes in the hot coals in the fireplace,and put fresh homemade butter on them,and now, some fifty years later, nothing has ever tasted so good... Pip and Mamaw lived near the head of the right hand fork of Buffalo Creek in Owsley County Kentucky,this is very near where Owsley,Clay,Perry and Leslie Counties meet and it is in the Buckhorn Lake Area of the Three Forks of the Kentucky River..This covers most of Clay,Owsley,Breathitt,Leslie and Perry Counties... The information contained herein,is as accurate as i have been able to ascertain,using Personal and Family Histories,Oral and Family Tradition,Bible Records,Tax Records,Courthouse Records, Birth,Death and Marriage Records,Cemetery Records,Tombstone Inscriptions,Census Records,Publications from Local,State and National Genealogical Societys,and many publications,both Personal and Private... This is my personal contribution to the Spurlock family and to all of my new "cousins" i have had the privilege to meet...and my thanks go out to all of those who have contributed so much of their time and resources in the search for our roots... All of the information contained within these files is being updated constantly, as it is received from the families involved...If anyone finds any information that is incorrect, please send me an update as soon as possible... ************************The Story Tellers********************* We are the chosen. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. In each family there is one member who who seems to hear the calling to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before...In my family, I am the chosen one... How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told my ancestors, you have a wonderful family and you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying to myself, I can't let this happen... The bones here are bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resolve to go ahead and build a life for their family, and for all of the generations to follow... |
