The Anton Srameks (Schramecks) of New York, New York

Updated May 23, 2004

This is a genealogy project to establish the family history of Anton Sramek, who came to the United States in the 1870s from Jungbunzlau (now Mlada'Boleslav), Bohemia (later Czechoslovakia and more recently the Czech Republic), by way of Dresden, Germany. Although SRAMEK is the original Czech spelling, The German spelling became SCHRAMECK and the latter spelling was carried to the United States. Some of Anton's family kept the Schrameck spelling, while others went back to Sramek. Anton was a shoemaker by trade and had traveled extensively, making shoes for royalty and the wealthy in Europe. Fleeing religious persecution in Bohemia, he left the family in Dresden and came to America, settling in New York City. His wife, Vincenzia, amd the children followed. One son, Rudolph, my grandfather, grew up in New York and worked for the U.S. Post Office. He married Ada Louise Conner and had one son, John Stirling Sramek, my father.

The thrust of this project is to fill in the blanks in this family tree and to expand it. To that end any pertinent information relating to this family line is hereby solicited and is much appreciated. It is intended that the results of this project will be published on the web and in printed form as well.
