Sroufe/Ranger Genealogy Home Page

Updated February 16, 2006

The purpose of this site is to help other researchers possibly find a clue to their family history as well as have a record & access to information for all our own family members, no matter how far & wide. Whether just curious or someone has caught the 'genealogy bug', WELCOME to this site. Do understand that it is a project in progress and each researcher needs to verify information to their own satisfaction as genealogy is not an exact science.

The SROUFE surname has many spellings as found in this research project---one researcher found 63 different spellings including SCHROUFE, SHROFE, SCROUFE and SCHROFF. Regardless of the variety of spellings, this surname seems to originate in Germany whereas the RANGER surname is from England. There are still some questions as to when/where some of these people migrated to the new world but MA, NY, PA & Canada seem to be the most thought possibilities & as early as 1620. Yet to be proven in some lines, but in the 16000's & 1700's these people (both surnames) are found in IN, MA & PA and in the 1800's in OH, IN, KY and WI then later to the present in IA, KS, WI and across the USA. There are connections to colonial families & a number of passengers on early colonial ships including the Mayflower. Through research there are also connections in several lines that go back as far as 0006 according to the Ancestral Files in SLC.

This has been a many years project and hopefully with more information added as time goes by. Additions/corrections are WELCOME if the source is provided. There are 12 family trees (primary individual is in parenthesis) which tie together in some way entitled:
