Nita Louise married Larry Dwain Murry on October 15, 1977. They had one child, a girl named Lauren Nicole Murry, born on May 18, 1980. Larry and Niki divorced on
RESUME - May 1995 Niki Murry graduated from McMahon College in Houston,Texas, after 14 mnths, begining a court reporting career as a teenager. She was always a kid in a hurry.
She immediately went to work with a freelance firm in Tidewter, Virginia, taking trials, depositions, public hearings, and anything the firm was called to do. The work oftentimes required taking testimony aboard ships, climbing up rope ladders to get there. An explosion occurred in the building in which Niki was reporting a deposition and the entire party had to make it down 30 flights of stairs--Niki refused to leave her steno machine, despite advice to the contrary. They resumed the deposition in the stock exchange office across the street.
While in Virginia, Niki earned the NSRA Certificate of Proficiency ,the precursor to today's RPR. Then she passed the testimony portion of the Certificate of Merit.
Next Niki moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and went to work with the freelance firm who reported theClay Shaw trial of Oliver Stone and JFK fame. The reporters there had fascinating stories to tell. There was lots of maritime work in New Orleans and it was great fun riding the streetcar to jobs.
Niki's alma mater beckoned her back. Niki began teaching day and night school at McMahon College. She arranged for the students to trek downtown, stenos in tow, to report the various meetings of the First National Women's Political Caucus. In attendance were Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, Sissy Farenthold ,and many other notables involved in the women's movement at the time. It was while teaching full time day and night school that Niki managed to complete her Certificate of Merit with an almost perfect score and on minimal practice.
After the teaching stint, Niki returned to reporting in Dallas, Texas, with a budding young freelance firm. One of the partners of the firm became Sarah Hughes' official reporter. Judge Hughes was the federal judge who swore in Lyndon Johnson on the airplanee after the Kennedy assissination. Niki filled in many times in her court and found her to be one of the greatest people to report for that a reporter could wish. As an artist, while with the freelance firm, Niki began cartooning for the NCRA Journal and her cartoons are published in the NCRA publication,"Humor in the Court."
Niki returned to teaching and began full time at a court reporting college in Dallas. She instituted a "reporter finishing" course among others ,and helped to dictate the RPR and CM tests twice a year. During this time the Texas CSR came into being and Niki was grandfathered in.
Next, Niki hired on with a new judge in family court in Dallas and stayed with her for eight years in the divorce capitol of the world. During this time she took Waylon Jenning's daughter's divorce, Leeza Gibbon's, Carolyn Hunt Schoelopf's daughter's divorce, some cult people, radio disk jockeys, and on and on. You meet everybody eventually in divorce court, she says.
During this tme her daughter, Lauren, was born and was dragged to the courthouse with regularity, durng court hours and after hours. While in family court, Niki pursued speed contests, entering the National Speed Contest several times and qualifying, and entering the Texas Speed Contest, placing second and third until 1988 when she captured the championship -- and the trophy. She was pulled over for speeding leaving the contest and tried to tell the officer she couldn't see out the back window because of that big old trophy blocking the view. The police officer said she was fast at EVERYTHING and still gave her the ticket.
While with the family court judge, Niki became President of the Dallas Court Reporters Association and was responsible for the largest meeting attendance ever when she instituted "Student Night," inviting all the court reporting students in town to come and mix and mingle with the reporters and listen to guest speakers, among whom was Catherine Crier of CNN and 20/20 fame. It was such a success, it became a Dallas annual tradition. After a few more forays into the world of freelancing, Niki finally settled down in federal court where she won the bronze medal in the first Award of Excellence Contest held for federal reporters, a grueling contest involving testimony at a mind-boggling 285 words per minute. Federal Court was an experience of a lifetime, with Niki reporting a several-months-long case with F. Lee Bailey being among the highlights. Mr. Bailey bestowed upon Niki the nickname "Stainless Steel Fingers" for her ability to keep reporting for prolonged periods of time, as the judge didn't like taking breaks.
In 1992, Niki relocated to California to apply her abilities to the TV world. She went to work for the producer of "Designing Women," sitting in the room with the writers and taking down verbatim writers sessions. While at "Designing Women' during their seventh and last season, it's no coincidence that the new character played by Judith Ivey was an ex-court reporter fromTexas who had married a lawyer who dropped dead at their wedding. Niki was responsible for naming the character, B. J. (which are her mother's initials). While there, she used her skills with the writers on "Hearts Afire" and "Evening Shade." Niki was FORCED to sit in the office alone with Burt Reynolds, taking down his story ideas. She said SOMEBODY had to do it. Tough job, this reporting.
The next job was the George Foreman show. When it was cancelled, Niki decided perhaps it was time to get a California CST so she could do other things. She passed last November with 6 errors and has been freelancing in addition to coming on board at the Dona Cole School.
She has stories to tell and more than a few test-taking and speed-building tips. Her teaching and reporting experience is vast and she loves to share it as she has a special affinity for students -- she says because she was such a bad one.
Niki is living proof that there is life during court reporting school and that there is deinitely life during your court reporting career.
