Hello All! I am currently working on my family history with the surname of STARLING. Other surnames that are included are: BALKOM, HARDY, PETERS, FORSYTH, GRANT, BUTTS, and many others.
My family appears to have originated in Nanesmond Virginia. They started moving south to Bertie-Columbus-Northhampton county in North Carolina. They eventually headed south passing through Ga.,AL., and onward into FL. Some of the cities they settled in are Columbus, GA., Phenix City, AL., Dothan, AL., and on down into WinterHaven, FL. These cities still contain many Starling ancestors today.
My father's name was Arnold Ray Starling b-1934 and he was married to Dorothy Annette Peters b-1936. Arnold's father was Arthur (NMI) Starling b-1905 who married Emma Melissa Balkom b-1891. Arthur was the son of Joseph Dempsey Starling b-1871 and was married to Lucy Anne Money b-1874. His father was William ALFRED Starling b-1825 who was married to five different wives: Camelia Jackson b-1829; Amanda A. Jackson b-1839; Nancy Campbell Hawkins b-1843; Milly Jackson b-1836; and Millie Elkins b-1829. Three of wives are presumed to have been sisters whose husbands died or were killed in the Civil War. Milly Jackson was first married to Henry Starling, who was Alfred's brother. Henry died as a result of wounds received in the war. Alfred also served in the Confederate army during the war. ALFRED's father was Solomon Wesley Starling b-1791 who married Susannah Strickland b-1808. Solomon was the son of John Starling b-1763 who was married to Tamar Godwin b-1767. John's father was John Starling b-1733 who married Mary Elizabeth Wells b-1740. His father was Isaac Starling b-1705 who was married to Sara (?) b-1707. Isaac was the son of Isaac Starling b-1663 who was married to Mrs. Isaac Starling b-1667.
It is reported that Isaac is the son of Nicholas Starling b-1656 and married to Ann Rountree b-1654. However this would mean Nicholas was approximately 7-10 years old when Isaac was born.
If anyone has any further information please let me know.
