SIR EDWARD¹⁴ STANLEY (THOMAS¹³, GEORGE¹², THOMAS¹¹, THOMAS¹⁰, JOHN⁹, JOHN⁸ DE STANLEY, WILLIAM⁷ DE STANLEIGH, JOHN⁶, WILLIAM⁵, WALTER⁴, WILLIAM³, ADAM², LYDULPH (LIULF)¹ DE ALDITHLEY) was born 1509, and died October 24, 1572 in Lathom, England. He married (1) DOROTHY HOWARD. He married (2) KATHERINE HOWARD 1529. She died 1530.

Notes for SIR EDWARD STANLEY:
He was only eleven years old when he succeeded to his father's title and estates and the King took responsibility for his upbringing until he came of age.

It is noted by Peter Stanley in his book, "The House of Stanley," that Edward loved the "pleasures of the world, and was celebrated for his magnificence and liberality. Queen Elizabeth used jestingly to say that 'The Earl of Derby and my Lord of Bedford make all beggars by their liberality.' It is recorded that twice a day, he fed from his kitchen at Knowsley, sixty old, aged and decrepit poor, and that every Good Friday for thirty-seven years, he fed 2,700 persons with food and drink, and gave them money. He had a reputation for being a just and generous master who honoured his tenants and refused to increase their rents. His motto was 'Let the undergrowth flourish, for the tenants are the support of the family and commonality the strength of the kingdom.'"
