IRISH CONNECTIONS: On my maternal side - I am researching the McCORMACK family from Derrycon or Derry-cose, County Laois [Queen's County] IRL; and the MAHONEY family from Kishkeam, County Cork, IRL.

Patrick McCORMACK [Parents: Daniel McCormack & Mary Cole] was born on or about 28-Apr-1860 at Derrycon, Co. Queens, Ireland and married Hanorah or 'Norah' MAHONEY [Parents: John Mahoney & Johanna (Hannah) Breen] at Charleville, Orrery, Queensland, Australia on 22-Oct-1891. Hanorah/Norah was born at Knockodonneusc, Kishkeam, Co Cork, Ireland - believed born around Nov 1870 and was under 21 years of age at her marriage. Patrick died 28-Apr-1937 aged 77 yrs at Charleville, Queensland, Australia and Norah had died earlier at Charleville, Qld on 29-Mar-1902. They had six children in total. 3 sons died in infancy.

What I would like to know is WHEN they emigrated to Australia and which ship they sailed on - from WHERE? Cork, IRL, perhaps? They may have sailed to Australia by way of U.S.A. and it is presumed they disembarked in Queensland. It is assumed that they may have known each other in Ireland. It is also assumed that they emigrated independent of each other. Patrick may have arrived in Queensland, Australia before Hanorah/Norah. It is not known if they came with other family members. However, Hanorah is believed to have travelled from Ireland with a Brigid HARRIGAN - who also settled at Charleville, Qld. When 'Norah' died in 1902 - her 6 yr old daughter, Mary Theresa McCORMACK- was brought up by Jack and Bridget "Granny" HARRIGAN at Charleville.

Does anyone have any information on why Irish lasses may have travelled from Cork, Ireland to travel to Charleville in Queensland? Was there a religious order [Catholic] established there? Was it something to do with lace-making?
Any information appreciated. Thank you.

On the paternal side I am trying to locate information on the STAFFORD family probably from Co Wexford Ireland.

The earliest trace I know of my STAFFORD family in Australia is MARTIN STAFFORD born Wellington, NSW, Australia on 24.2.1883 [seventh child of Michael STAFFORD (b. about 1839) from Co. Wexford, IRL and Mary Connelly or Connolly - (born about 1845) also from Co. Wexford, IRL].

Michael and Mary had married at Eniscorthy, IRL on 04-Nov-1863.

It is though that Michael and Mary STAFFORD emigrated to Australia sometime between 1863 and 1870 - when their fifth child, John was born in NSW.

My great-grandfather Martin STAFFORD married Ada NEVINS on 4.10.1902 at Wee Waa, New South Wales. Martin's grandfather and grandmother were Richard and Bridget STAFFORD. I am particularly interested to find out more about Michael STAFFORD - when he emigrated to Australia, how, and where he disembarked. Did he arrive in Australia by way of New Zealand?

I am also researching my husband family - STAINES from Romford, Essex, U.K on his paternal side & MACKNEY family from Deptford, County Kent, U.K on the maternal side.

Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share information that I have.

Many thanks
Jennie Staines (nee Stafford)
