"War Veteran Dies at Home in Union Co.
Amos G. Becher, aged Civial War veteran, of Union county, died Sunday morning at 3 o'clock at his home at Pleasant View near New Columbia. His death followed a several weeks illness. Mr. Becher was 85 years of age. Practically his entire life was spent in Union county. He was a veteran of the Civil War having served in Co. I, 202nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Thomas Weidnsaul, Mrs. Samuel Bennage, and Mrs. Harry P. Ranck, of Union county, and two sons, Elmer, of Watsontown, and Samuel, of Milton. Funeral services will be held from the late home tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. J.W. Zang, pastor of the New Columbia Evangelical church, will officiate. Interment will be made in Highland cemetery."

1861-1865--Tradition.
A traditional family rumor is that Amos G. Becher abandoned the Civil War once, and when asked later where he had been he supposedly said, "I was to buy a new pair of shoes!" This was a common excuse among soldiers of the day since shoes were scarce.

A. Becher appears on the map living on lot #81, Third St., New Columbia.

1872--Deed. Union Co., PA, Book V, page 22, June 4.
Amos G., Margaret J., Joseph, and Lydia Becher granted land in White Deer Twp. to James Mar and Dan young. This same property was originally sold in 1819 for the purpose of a school and was again sold in 1839. It was lot No. 81. Joseph L. and James Mar are probably the same ones as those mentioned on the 1850 and 1860 Census living in the home of Jacob Becher, father of Amos G.

Amos G. and William Becher are listed as privates of the 202nd Regiment under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John A. Maus, with Company I under command of Captain Jacob Neyhart, First Lieutenant Jacob H. Brown, etc. One of the Sergeants is a Samuel S. Rank. Amos G. and William are the first in the alphabetical list of privates.

Sep 1887--Residence. (Marriage of Elmer Baker & Mary Keefer. Union Co., PA Application for Marriage License, No. 249).
The document states that both Elmer, son of Martin & Utica Keefer, and Mary, daughter of Amos & Margaret Baker, resided at White Deer Township, Union Co., PA. This could perhaps mean their parents were residing in White Deer Township also.

Ranck," was probably supplied by Sallie (Becher) Ranck (1870-1937), a grand-daughter and husband to Harry P. Ranck).
"... Amos G. (Mrs. Ranck's father), who was born at New Columbia, November 25, 1840, and is still residing in his native township. for fifteen years he followed the sawyer's trade but at present is not engaged in any regular business. In 1864, he enlisted in Company I, 202nd P. V. I., under Capt. Jacob Neighbert, and, although he took part in several important engagements, including the second battle of Bull Run, he was not wounded. He belongs to the Grand Army Post at Milton, and, in politics, is a steadfast Republican. Amos Becker was married to Miss Margaret J. Berkheimer, a native of White Deer township, born December 24, 1842. Her father, Samuel Berkheimer, a farmer by occupation, was born in Chester county, Penn., and died in White Deer township, Penn. He and his wife, Mary Cattler, reared a family of four children: Margaret (Mrs. Becker); Joseph (a farmer near Mazeppa, Penn.); Eliza (who married Levi Keefer, a farmer in White Deer township, Union county); and William (a resident of the same township). Mr. and Mrs. Becher are devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and have always been in hearty sympathy with progress in all lines. They have five living children: (1) Elmer, born September 24, 1862, married Miss Maize Keefer, and has had three children--Lula, Lee, and Hazel. (2) Lida, born May 11, 1866, married Samuel Bennage, a carpenter of White Deer township, Penn., and has on son, Albert. (3) Sallie O., born March 8, 1870, is the wife of our subject. (4) Samuel, born February 10, 1868, is a railway employee, and resides at Shamokin, Penn. He married Miss Mary Cornelius, and has on daughter, Sadie. (5) Miss Clara, born May 27, 1878, resides with her parents."
