Notes for LOUISA JANE STANLEY:

Louisa was a daughter of James Y. and Caroline Betts Stanley. She was born at her father's home in Dacula, Georgia and lived her entire life in Gwinnett County. She married Bona Allen, Sr. in 1866 at the age of eighteen. Together they had six children.

Bona Allen was a son of Washington Allen of Dacula. All of the Allen children were born and raised in Dacula. Wash Allen was in the business of tanning hides, and even imported his tanning chemicals from England. This trade he taught to his sons, particularly Robert and Bona.

In about 1871 Bona moved to Rome, Georgia where he stayed for about two years. He and Louisa moved to Buford in 1873, actually following his brother Robert there for the hide tanning business. Bona eventually ran the entire business. With the success of their ventures, Bona moved his parents to Buford about 1874.

Vines Allen, Bona's brother, had no particular interest in the tanning business. He married one of Louisa's sisters, Georgia Stanley, and moved to Houschton, Georgia.

The tannery grew greatly in the following years. It was expanded to include a horse collar factory, a harness factory, saddle factory, glue factory, and a shoe factory. The Allen family came to be viewed as the leading family in the county - their business payroll exceeding one million dollars annually and employing thousands of county residents. At the time of his death Bona Allen owned approximately seventy-five percent of of the property in Buford, Georgia.

In 1912 his son, Bona Allen, Jr. built the magnificent mansion for his parents which still stands as a showplace in downtown Buford. The home is now the residence of a local businessman, Mr. Bailey. Leading to the mansion are several white-columned homes where the sons of Bona and Louisa lived. In 1986 the homes were used for offices by local attorneys.

Louisa grew ill in her final years. Her sister, Bettie, moved to Buford to help care for her. When Louisa died in 1918, Bona Allen married Bettie Stanley. This was the second marriage for each of them.

Bona Allen died in 1925 and is buried beside Louisa at the Buford City Cemetery. Bettie returned to the home of her father in Dacula where she resided until her death in 1951. She is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dacula.

Robert Allen first moved to Buford to start a tanning business there. Bona, his brother, later moved his family there. Nearly all the Allen family lived in Buford, Georgia, and most are buried there.
