Dr. Samuel Locklin Hinton, physician and
druggist of Dacula, Gwinnett County, Georgia, was born in Walton County January
25, 1846. He was the fourth and youngest child of Susan Freeman and William
Hinton. His father, a large land owner
and at one time tax collector of Walton County, died of fever in his
forty-seventh year, leaving the following children: John, Henry, Mary Ann and Samuel who was then three months
old.
In a short time Samuel's mother moved to
Gwinnett County where she bought land and built a home which still stands about
two miles west of Dacula. The family
later moved to a house which they built in town.

Notes for ALICE STANLEY:
Alice Stanley was born at the home of her
parents in Dacula, Georgia, in 1852. She lived her entire life in Gwinnett
County. She married Dr. Samuel L.
Hinton in 1870 at the age of eighteen. He was the youngest of four children of
William and Susan Freeman Hinton.
Sam Hinton attended county schools and at
the age of sixteen enlisted in the Confederate Army - the Fifty-fifth Georgia
Regiment - where he served the entire war. Later he attended the College of
Physicians and Surgeons at Macon, Georgia. He returned home to Dacula and began
practicing medicine.
It is said that Alice Stanley was of rare
beauty and a good wife, taking great pride in her husband's work. Dr. Hinton
was known and respected in the area. His devotion to serving the people of the
community made him as much a friend as a doctor.
The Hinton family was very active in their
church life. Methodists and members of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in
Dacula. When the meeting house of Pleasant Hill was overdue for extensive
repairs, the Hinton family offered to build a new church in town. Hinton Memorial Methodist Church bears a
plaque in memorial to Sam and Alice Stanley Hinton.
Alice and Sam had nine children: Alma,
Susan, Ada, Edgar, Anna Lee, Chalmers, Claude, Una and Herbert. Three of their
daughters later married doctors.
Dr. Sam Hinton died in 1918 at the age of
seventy-two. Alice Hinton died eighteen years later in 1936.
Today Herbert's children, Alice Hinton Ray
and Sam Hinton, reside in Dacula. Sam lives at the Dacula home place and Alice
resides in her father' s home on Lawrenceville Highway
