Source: The Official History of Laurens County Georgia 1807- 1941 by Bert ha Sheppard Hart, M.A. (Agee Publishers, Inc. 1941). Book located at Genea logical library in Thomasville, Ga. THe book tells the story of the Jam es Stanley II family and its descendants.
* James Stanley II, emigrated from Jones County, North Carolina where the family had been prominent for a number of years, and located in Laure ns County, Georgia in 1811. He settled in the northwestern part of the cou nty. The time of his coming to Laurens can be determined by his purcha se of lands at public sale on Sept 6, 1811. This was four years after t he County had been formed and two years following the change of the coun ty seat from Sumpterville to Dublin. The Stanleys has therefore mu ch to do with the early settlement of the County.
Before James II died on Janurary 23, 1771, he established the Stanley Fami ly Cemetery, referred to as "The Ditch", about twelve miles north of Dubl in and within a half mile of his home. Members of the family are buri ed in the front part of the cemetery and the slaves in the rear. This ceme tery was established in the early part of 1812 and is still maintain ed by the Stanley Family.
James II built his first home within a hundred yards of "The Ditch". He l ater erected a second home near the first. This house was so well construc ted that, while very old, is still standing. The timber was cut on James S tanley's plantation, was sawed at his own mill and erected largely by h is own labor.
James Stanley constructed a water mill on his property which was kno wn as the Stanley Mill, which is more than 100 years old and is still serv ing the public. In the northern part of Laurens County and the southern pa rt of Wilkinson. The stream on which it is located is almost on the li ne of the two counties. The mill was inherited by James Rowell Stanley a nd at his death was purchased by Dr. James T. Chappell and the name chang ed to Chappell's Mill and has remained so named. Ownership is now out of t he family (this account was written in 1941). The last member to own the m ill was Judge Ira Stanley Chappell. He was also the last member to li ve in the home of Ira Stanley, his grandfather. The home no longer exist s; it was destroyed by fire.
James stanley entered the mercantile business under the name and sty le of H.B. and Ira Stanley, his two sons. He was quite a large planter, ow ning seven thousand acres. He, Governor George M. Troup, Dr. Nathan Tucke r, General David Blackshear, THomas McCall and Joel Coney were the large st land owners in Laurens County, Georgia.
Governor Troup, Dr. Tucker and General Blackshear lived on the east si de of the Oconee River and James Stanley II, Joel Coney and Thomas McCa ll lived on the west side of the river.
James II was a member of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He never soug ht or held public office. He was interested in education and gave 10 acr es of land for the erection of a school building close to his home. The re is no picture of James, but he was described by Judge Chappell as bei ng "self reliant, brave, earnest, generous, a staunch friend and a good ci tizen."

James Stanley II, emigrated from Jones County, North Carolina, where the family has been prominent for a number of years, and located in Laurens Cou nty, Georgia in 1811. he settled in the northwestern part of the county a nd was the progenitor of the Laurens County Stanleys. THe time of his comi ng to Laurens can be determined by his purchase of lands at public sa le on Sept 6, of the year above mentioned. This was four years after the c ounty had been formed and two years following the change of the COunty se at from Sumpterville to Dublin. The Stanleys had therefore much to do wi th the early settlement of the County. For 130 years there have been Stanl eys in Laurens.
The family is of unquestionable English origin, as the name was derived fr om a very rugged portion of Staffordshire and was first spelled stonyle a, Stonelea, Standlea and finally Stanley. It was derived from the saxon " Stan" a stone and lie, lee, lege, ley, etc. a stony place, pasture, meado w, rough woodland. Some of the American Stanleys, during the Revolutiona ry War, as an act of patriotism left the "n" out of the name and made it I rish. The family came to Georgia from North Carolina and there is a coun ty there by that name spelled "Stanly" and later a town was established sp elled "Stanley" like the name is now generally written.
stanley was the family name of the Earl of Derby for whom the great raci ng event was named. When Georgia was chartered, June 9, 1732, the crown na med James Stanley, Earl of Derby, one of the trustees. At that time the re was a James Stanley in North Carolina and more were to follow, viz: Jam es Stanley II, who located in Laurens County, and his son James Rowell Stanley.
James Stanley II was the ninth child and second son of James Stanley I a nd his wife Winnifred. He was born in Jones Co, North Caorlina on Jan 2 3, 1771 and died Apr 14, 1841 in Laurens Co. and is buried in the Stanl ey cemetery, "The Ditch", which he established about twelve miles nor th of Dublin and within a half mile of his home. Members of the family we re buried in the front part of the cemetery and the slaves in the rear. Th is cemetery was established in the early part of 1812 and is still maintai ned by the Stanley family. As it is approximately 130 years old, it is pro bably one of the oldest private cemeteries in Georgia still in use. The c emetery is enclosed by an iron fence. In the year 1798 James Stanley II w as united in marriage to Leah Fordham, daughter of Benjamin FOrdham of Jon es Co, NC. she was born Sep 6, 1776 and died Mar 9, 1853 and was buried be side her husband in the Stanley Cemetery. she was the sister of Mary Fordh am, who was the second wife of John Stanley, brother of James.
He built his first home within a hundred yards of the ditch. He later erec ted a second home near the first. This house was so well constructed th at while very old, is still standing. The timber was cut on James Stanley 's plantation, was sawed at his own mill and erected largely by his own la bor.
James Stanley constructed a water mill on his property which was kno wn as Stanleys Mill, which is more than 100 years of age and is still ser ving the public in the northern part of Laurens County and the southern pa rt of Wilkinson. The stream on which it is located is almost on the li ne of the two counties. The mill was inherited by James Rowell Stanley a nd at his death was purchased by Dr. James T. Chappell and the name chang ed to Chappell's Mill and is still so named, although the ownership is n ow out of the family. The last member of the family to own the mill was t he late Judge Ira Stanley Chappell, who was also the last member of the fa mily to own and live in the home of Ira Stanley, his grandfather, which w as one of the most imposing homes in Laurens county and which was destroy ed by fire a number of years ago.
James Stanley entered the merchantile business under the same name and sty le of H.B. and Ira Stanley, his two sons. He was quite a large planter, a nd owned some seven thousand acres. He, Governor george M. Troup, Dr. Nath an Tucker, General David Blackshear, Thomas McCall and Joel Coney were t he largest land owners in Laurens.
governor Troup, Dr. Tucker and General Blackshear lived on the east si de of the Oconee River and James Stanley, Joel Coney and Thomas McCall liv ed on the west side.
James stanley was a member of the Poplar Springs baptist Church. He nev er sought or held public office. There are no traditions in the fami ly as to his characteristics, but it is known that he was much interest ed in education and donated ten acres of ground at a cross roads, near h is home for the erection of a school building which was maintained until j ust a few years ago. There is no painting or photograph of him , but Jud ge Chappell, a few years ago, described him as being "self-reliant, brav e, earnest, generous, a staunch friend and a good citizen."

Source: The Official History of Laurens County Georgia 1807-1941:
"Ira Stanley was the second son of James Stanley II. He was a man of consi derable wealth and hospitality; one of the largest planters in the count y, owning a great deal of land and quite a number of slaves. After the ema nicipation all the slaves who expressed a desire to remain were employed a nd many remained.Ira was an exceedingly popular man and a very public spir ited citizen. He was opposed to the liquor traffic and when a barroom w as opened near his property by a preacher whose denomination was not oppos ed to the use and sale of liquor, he expostulated with him and, when infor med that the preacher did not recieve enough from his congregation upon wh ich to live, Ira stanley paid him what his profit was from the whiskey tra ffic each month, he purchased the stock and poured it out!
In the old days the office of sheriff was not a paid position, so men of w ealth took turns filling the position. Ira stanley was sheriff in the yea rs 1825 and 1826. He was then elected to the House of Representatives in 1 834 and 1835.
Ira Stanley was fond of visitors and travelers which were entertained almo st nightly in his home. Mr. stanley was a man of great affability of mann er and readily made friends of all whom he ccame in contact. His integri ty and honesty were reproach; his liberality was proverbial and his genero sity was unlimited. He gave his substance to the poor, and his wisdom to a ll who sought it.
Janet Harris McCall stanley, wife of Ira, was a woman of great ability, ra re charm and personality. She came from a very prominent georgia and Sou th carolina family."
