Generation No. 1

1.  GEORGE1 STANDLEY was born Abt. 1635, and died Abt. 1698 in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.  He married BETHIAH LOVETT Abt. 1670 in Salem, Essex, MA, daughter of JOHN LOVETT and MARY GRANT.  She was born June 13, 1652.

Hardback text of "Vital Records to 1850, Essex Co., Beverly, MA, Vol. I, Births, pub. by Topsfield Historical Society, Topsfield Historical Society, 1906,  Newcomb & Gauss, Printers, Salem, Mass.  (Purchased by me from Goodspeed's Book Shop, Boston, MA 1963 and remains in my possession).   {Sept., 1998}

From the preface:  "Nov. 07, 1668, at a session of the General Court, the vote of the town of Salem consenting to the separation was presented and 'The Court, on pervsll of this returne (sic) judge it meete to grant that Basse River be henceforeth a towneship of themselves, referring it to Salem  to accomodate them with lands and bounds suitably for them, & that it be called Beverly'.    On Sept. 11, 1753, part of Salem was annexed. On April 27th, 1857 part of the town was annexed to Danvers.  March 23, 1894, the town was incorporated as a city.  ...........By 1765, the population of Beverly was 2,164."

Bethia was most probably Bethia LOVETT.  "New England Marriages Prior to 1700", page 701,  by Clarence Almon Torrey (Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, MD, 1985 states her maiden surname as Lovett.  However, there is an error probably a typographical error, which gives b. date 1671. and think it was meant to read m. date 1671.

I am a professional genealogist and historical researcher.  For more than 10  years I have been working [part time] on a book on the "Desc. of George and Bethiah STANDLEY of Beverly, Mass."  Because of this the "Standley book project" sits on the back burner most of the time. But, about once ever two months I get a letter like yours and I fill in a few more page's [and add a few weeks of additional research] to the project. The book is over 300 pages currently and will probably grow too about 500 before I stop [or die].

My line to old George 1 is as follows Geo 1 to John2 to William3, to David 4, to David 5, to Harriet 6 who married Paul H. Hall in 1834, to Alfred J. Hall 7 to Edward L. Hall 8 to Wallace Legro Hall 9 to me, Stephen Peter Hall 10.  So I am a 10th generation descendant of old George1.

A Matthew STANLEY [no known relation to George1 ] was also living in Essex County in the late 1600s.  Most of the Matthew line was in the Topsfield, MA, area in the 1650s [another town in Essex Country] and then most, but not all, of the 2nd generation moved to the Attleboro, MA, area.  If I ever finish the

George STANDLEY book I have sources notes for the first 6 generations of Matthew's family.

Matthew and most of his descendants spelled the name without the "d." But I also found that after the 3rd or 4th generation of George's family some dropped the "d" also, so it is unwise to use the spelling as any kind of guide as to which STANDLEY/STANLEY family someone might belong to.

George1 died about 1698.  Not in Dec 1715.  I have a photocopy of the will probate record that settled the estate and named his wife Bethia as executrix dated 18 July 1698.  Most of his children are also listed in the will. It was his son George 2 husband of Jane STACY who died in Dec 1715.  I found on the original Beverly record's, [not the printed transcription of 1906] the application for tax relief due to the death of

Jane's husband George2.  Also, you will note, the last child of this union in born in 1715, and on 21 Apr 1726 she marries John STONE as her 2nd husband.

(Reference from correspondence between Larry Stanley and Stephen Hall)

In your e-mail you ask:

1. Jonathan Standley of Essex who married Elizabeth Foster in 1705. They had one son, Jonathan.  There was a Jonathan (and Elizabeth) in Perquimans County, NC by 1707 dealing in land transactions.  This Jonathan was known to have at least two children, Jonathan and George.

Jonathan 2[Geo1] STANDLEY: In checking the draft of my book I notice that I wrote in the margin, " no death record on Jonathan or wife Elizabeth locally, must have moved, check further, ditto on son Jonathan."

Text of correspondence:

Jonathan2 [Geo1] STANDLEY, bpt. 18 Jan 1680, Beverly, MA, who m. Elizabeth FOSTER, at Boston, 25 Jan 1704, had only one son [as you noted] born in Beverly.

That son was Jonathan 3 [Jonathan2, Geo1]STANDLEY.   I could find no further record of any of these three people staying in New England after 1706.  So I would say your theory has a great deal of merit.

It is also supported by the fact that a Jonathan and Elizabeth appear on a NC land deed in 1707 on which he identified himself as a Mariner, and that Jonathan and Elizabeth (NC) are known to have at least two sons, Jonathan and George.  Further, the name of Sands Stanley appears on a Dobbs Co., NC land deed (1746-1750).

The fact that this Jonathan and wife Elizabeth STANDLEY would name sons with names matching those of Jonathan2's other siblings [i.e. George and Sands] is very strong secondary evidence.

Sands or Sans is a very unusual name and I have never found anyone in my 20 years of researching familes in New England, who had that name that did not descend from George1 and Bethia STANDLEY.  It is very likely that SANDS was the surname of on of George or Bethia's ancestors.

As I indicated I have been unable to find court, marriage, birth, or death records in the New England area for Jonathan and Elizabeth or their son after 1706.  I think you are on the correct track.  I just don't know if you will ever find any proof positive that this is a match.

George(1) had nine children, two of whom disappear.

Jonathan(2) baptised 18 January 1679/80, married Elizabeth Foster 25 January 1704 (McGlennen, Boston Marriages) and had a son Jonathan born 16 July 1705.  Jonathan(2) was listed as a mariner of Boston when his father's estate was settled in 1706 and then there is no more trace of him in Massachusetts that I can find.

Samuel(2) was born 29 October 1686.  He was alive in 1715 when he received a share of his father's estate, but I have no marriage or other information.

Justices of the Peace presided over this court. These Justices were usually men owning property and leaders of the community. They were appointed by the Governor who took the advice of the legislators. Any 3 justices made up a quorum to conduct business.

In 1760 these included: John Campbell, John Dawson, Cullen Pollock, Edward Rasor, Lillington Lockhard, Humphry Nichols, David Standley and William Gray.

The Court Records are usually not indexed, but provide genealogical gems for the persistent researcher! This court was abolished in 1868 with the reorganization of counties after the Civil War.

One GEORGE served in the 5th Regiment during the Revolutionary War, and

transferred to the 1st Regiment in February, 1780. He is listed on the roll

of the lst Regiment, Continental Line, as a Private. Beside his name in the

notation "5th Regiment." He was on the roster at Ft. Sullivan, SC, from

1776-1780 (Ft. Moultrie). On August 27, 1775, there was a Sgt. GEORGE

STANDLY in Col. Thomson's Regiment of Rangers from South Carolina. His age

was given as 38. He was in a 700-man army at the tip of Sullivan Island near

Charleston.

(Our GEORGE should have been closer to age 55 if he was indeed born in

1720.)

A Land Bounty Warrant was issued in Wilkes County, Georgia on March 1, 1784,

to GEORGE STANDLEY. The Warrant was executed July 16, 1784, for 100 acres

bounded on the west by Fishing Creek (Warrant #890). Apparently, GEORGE died

about the spring of 1784, and the Grant was issued to his wife, ADER, and

dated October 13, 1785. A letter of Administration on probate of the GEORGE

STANDLEY estate was granted to ADER May 28, 1784 in Wilkes County. Inventory

was taken and presented in court July 27, 1784, and recorded in October.

More About GEORGE STANLEY:

Name 2: George STANDLEY

Date born 2: Abt. 1720

Died 2: Abt. 1783, Wilkes County, Georgia

Notes for ADER:

[Composite5.ged]

Children of GEORGE STANLEY and ADER are:

20.              i.    LEWIS ISHAM4 STANLEY, b. Abt. 1750, Probably Bertie Co., NC; d. 1815, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

21.             ii.    EZEKIEL STANDLEY, b. Abt. 1755, Probably Bertie Co., NC; d. 1835, Covington, Newton Co., GA.

15.  SANDS3 STANLEY (JONATHAN2 STANDLEY, GEORGE1) was born Abt. 1725.  He married UNKNOWN Abt. 1740 in Probably Dobbs Co., North Carolina.

Notes for SANDS STANLEY:

ACTUAL IDENTITY AND PARENTAGE OF THIS SANDS STANDLEY IS NOT PROVEN!

The ancestry of  George Stanley (d. 1784 in Wilkes Co., GA) and Sands (d. 1796 in Cheraws Dist. SC) leads to their residence in North Carolina in the early to mid-1700s.  The ancestry of George Stan(d)ley, a son of Jonathan Standley,  has revealed a connection to the Essex County, MA Standley family which included men named Jonathan, George, David and Sands. The name 'Sands'  has not been found in any other Stanley lineage.  The MA, NC, SC, GA lineages are most probably the same family.

1. His age shown by presence in NC deed records (1746-1750) probably place him in this family.

2. This Sands may be a son of Jonathan and Carolyn Standley (second wife). Jonathan Sr. had sons Jonathan Jr. born 1705 and George born abt. 1720.

3. This Sands may be a son of Sands (1676-1702) and Abigail HASCHAL Standley, but no proof has been found.  There is record of only one child of this union, Sands b. 1702 and married Mary Charder in 1724.

4. This Sands may be a son of David or Samuel Stanley, sons of George and Bethia Stanley.  As yet we have no lineage information for either of these men.

5. There is an unconfirmed family of Captain George Stanley and his son, Samuel Sands Stanley, of Maine.  A possible lineage is George and Bethia Stanley, (2) son George and Jane Stacy, (3) son George and Abigail Morgan, who had a son George born May 27, 1722.  That son could have been Samuel Sands Stanley.

From Elaine Campbell:  I have come across some notes that came from Dr. W.Stanley Hoole of the University of Alabama (this was1978).  He gives Thomas Stanley and wife from England settled in New Kent Co. Va. in 1600.  They had three children James born 1688, Thomas 1689, John 1691. He said our family was from  John Sands Stanley who settled in NC and Sands II who settled in SC. The reason I'm sending this is I wondered if the Sands father of Sands wife Zipha) could be this John Sands that he told me we were desended from.

(Larry S. Note) Actual letter from W. Stanley Hoole to Elaine Campbell included a family chart placing Sands (b. 1742) in the lineage of John Stanley (b. 11-11-1691 and documented in Quaker records) with a question mark.   His chart is not clear about how Sands fit into the lineage of John Stanley.   W. S. Hoole did state he was convinved that Sands (b. 1742) was a son of the elder Sands Stanley (b. abt 1725), which is highly plausible.

Thomas Edwards was to become the father-in-law of Sands Stanley (b. 1742) who married Zilpha Edwards.  Jonathan Stanly listed here was the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Foster Standley.

The Roster of the Patriots in the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, 1776, lists (probably) the sons of the elder Sands Standley:

Shadrack Stanley, of Dobbs County, served as a sergeant under Captain Benjamin Sheppard and Colonel Abraham Sheppard. Since his officers participated in the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, Stanley was possibly in the encounter. (Journal "A", 109)

20.  LEWIS ISHAM4 STANLEY (GEORGE3, JONATHAN2 STANDLEY, GEORGE1) was born Abt. 1750 in Probably Bertie Co., NC, and died 1815 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  He married ADAH MARTIN Unknown in South Carolina.  She was born Unknown, and died Unknown.

Notes for LEWIS ISHAM STANLEY:

LEWIS was born about 1750, probably in Bertie County, NC. He married ADAH,

believed by some to have been ADAH MARTIN, daughter of JAMES, of Tryon, NC.

She was born about 1750 in Anson County, NC.

In 1772, the Buffalo Baptist Church was organized near Grover, NC. LEWIS was

a charter member, and remained on the membership rolls there until he moved

to Pendleton District, SC, in 1807. His farm was located on Cherokee Creek

in Spartanburg District. JAMES MARTIN also lived in this area. The church

roll also listed a RHODA MARTIN, deceased January 26, 1808. This may have

been the wife of JAMES and the mother of ADAH.

One Stanley family tradition is that LEWIS served under GEORGE WASHINGTON in

the Revolutionary War. At one time during the war, the King's men raided his

home and took all the bed linens, even taking the pallet his small daughter,

ANNIE, was lying on very ill. LEWIS him-self was at home on leave at the

time, having contacted smallpox. His wife kept him hidden out in the woods

with only a cowhide for protection. If this story is true, LEWIS and his

father GEORGE were in the Revolution at the same time. Revolutionary War

Records list LEWIS as a private in the Regular Light Dragoons, Continental

Troops.

In 1777, LEWIS was a witness to the will of a WILLIAM WALKER. WILLIAM had

purchased the farm of GEORGE and ADER STANLEY in 1775, on Fishing Creek.

Census records from Spartanburg County, SC show:

1790. LEWIS STANLEY

4 white males under 16 (GEORGE, LEWIS and JOHN)

4 white males 16 and over, including head of household (JAMES, WILLIAM,

THOMAS and LEWIS SR.)

5 white females, including head of family (RHODA, ANN, ELIZABETH, ADAH)

1800. LEWIS STANLEY

2 males 10-16 (LEWIS JR., GEORGE)

1 male 45+ (LEWIS SR.)

3 females 16-26) (RHODA, ANN, ELIZABETH)

1 female 45+ (ADAH)

Spartanburg County records, 1785-1799, show:

"Ordered that LEWIS STANDLEY be exempted from a judgement against him for

Estray, upon paying the costs, as he produced a satisfactory probate for the

same, which showed that it was proven away and not converted to his own

use."

"Agreeable to a petition for a road from Capt. DANIEL McCLAREN'S to

intersect a road leading to Union Court House near the big meadows setting

forth that DANIEL McCLAREN, LEWIS STANDLEY, and JOHN COOPER lay off the same

and for said STANLEY to open, oversee and keep the same in order, is granted

by the Court...."

Other records from the same county show:

Oct. 31, 1793: JOHN MARTIN, Esq., to LEWIS STANDLEY, Spartanburgh, for £50

S.C. money sold 250 ac. on both sides Cherokee Creek...." March 25, 1801.

"JAMES MARTIN to EZEKIEL STANDLEY, Spartanburgh, for $50 sold 139 ac. on

Cherokee Cr.; border: EZEKIEL STANDLEY, LEWIS STANLEY and RICHARD ARNOLD.

Witness LEWIS STANLEY and RHODA STANLEY...." (RHODA was EZEKIEL'S wife, and

LEWIS also had a daughter named RHODA. EZEKIEL'S will, dated July 17, 1805,

mentioned his wife RHODA. It was witnessed by LEWIS and GEORGE STANLEY and

DANIEL McCOY, and filed August 3, 1805.)

LEWIS and ADAH moved to Pendleton County, SC in 1807, after selling their

land in Spartanburg:

"Dec. 22, 1807: LEWIS STANLEY and wife ADAH (Spartanburgh) to Major Hancock

for $300 sold 230 ac. on waters of Cherokee Creek on W. side of Broad Road.,

border: EZEKIEL STANLEY desc....Signed LEWIS STANLEY and ADAH'S mark."

BENJAMIN and NANCY are buried in the Stanley Cemetery near Sterling in

Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. ELIZABETH and JOHN were married at the

residence of LEWIS STANLEY JR., on December 26, 1859, by R. Dodson,

minister.

LEWIS and ADAH'S son, JOSHUA DAVID, is our next direct ancestor.

JOSHUA DAVID STANLEY

JOSHUA DAVID, or DAVID, as he is known in most records, was born June 16,

1793, in South Carolina. He was given land by his father in 1813 in

Pendleton District. Soon after his father's death, DAVID went to Tennessee,

where he first married DELILAH JOHNS about 1815. He was in Wilson County in

1820, and Bedford County by 1830.

1820 Wilson County Census:

JOSHUA DAVID STANLEY, 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-26, 1 male 26-45, 2 females

under 10, 1 female 16-26. (Who the male 18-26 was is unknown.)

1830 Bedford County Census:

JOSHUA DAVID STANLEY, 2 males under 5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female

5-10, 1 female 10- 15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30.

They had four known children, but perhaps six according to the census: ELIZA

ANN, who died at age 8; SARAH EMMALINE; MARTHA CLEMENTINE; and FELIX

ROBERTS.

DELILAH died in 1823, when FELIX was four days old.He was raised by the

FRANCIS MARTIN ARNOLD family in Bedford County, TN. The Arnold family lived

near LEWIS STANLEY in South Carolina in 1808. It is said that FELIX later

went to Arkansas and no further records have been found of him.

After DELILAH died, DAVID moved to Alabama and settled there. On February

15, 1827, he married FATIMA THOMAS in Tuscaloosa County. She was born in

1806, the daughter of JOSHUA THOMAS and REBECCA WHEELER. DAVID'S brother,

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, married FATIMA'S sister, NANCY, and they also lived in

Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. It is not known which family settled there

first.

The 1840 census in Tuscaloosa County shows:

DAVID STANLEY with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 at 40-50, 1

female 5-10, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 30-40, and 1 female 40-50.

In 1850, still in the same county, the census shows:

DAVID STANLEY, 56

TIMA, 44

GEORGE, 22

THOMAS, 19

DELILA, 17

HORTON, 15

ELVIRA, 12

WILLIAM, 7

ANGELINE, 5

MARTHA WEATHINGTON, 48, widow (FATIMA'S sister)

Children of DAVID and FATIMA were:

GEORGE WASHINGTON BENJAMIN L.

THOMAS

DELILA

DAVID HORTON

ELVIRA ANN

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON

MARY ANGELINE

SAMUEL THOMPSON

Family history says the Stanleys lived on a cotton plantation and owned

slaves.

By 1860, they appear in Walker County, Alabama, on the census as:

DAVID STANLEY, 57 (should be 67)

FERTIMY, 54

ELVIRA ANN, 21

WM. H., 17

MARY A., 15

SAMUEL THOMPSON, 12

By 1870, JOSHUA DAVID and FATIMA were in Itawamba County, Mississippi. He

was 77; she was 62, and her sister, MARTHA WEATHINGTON, 68, was with them.

Sometime before 1880, regardless of his advanced age, JOSHUA DAVID and

FATIMA moved to Texas with their son WILLIAM, where JOSHUA DAVID died in

1881. FATIMA'S death date is not inscribed on her headstone, but both are

buried in the Morrow Cemetery, southeast of Cleburne, in Johnson County,

Texas. Their son, WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON STANLEY, is the next of our direct

ancestors in this line. WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON STANLEY

The following was written by ERVIN STANLEY, son of WILLIAM. It was

discovered among his papers several years after ERVIN'S death, and is

reprinted here to give us a better idea of the life of WILLIAM HENRY

HARRISON STANLEY.

"WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON STANLEY was born August 24, 1842, died January 31,

1927. He served the full four years in the Civil War in the southern

cavalry under General Forest.

WILLIAM enlisted in the Confederate Army on September 14, 1861, at

Montgomery, Alabama. He was a part of Companies B and C, serving in the

17th Alabama Infantry. He was a private, later promoted to First Sergeant.

The only other information about his service was taken from the Muster Roll

records, which said that he was granted a leave in January, 1863, for two

days at Blakely, Alabama. At one point, in August and September of 1863, he

was listed as an Ordination Sergeant at Battery Tracey, Alabama.

After the war, and his travels around Texas, WILLIAM went back to Alabama to

get his parents. His sister ELVIRA and brother SAMUEL came along, as did

his aunt MARTHA, who was his mother's sister.

The 1880 census in Johnson County, Texas, shows:

WM. H. STANLEY, 37, farmer

SAMUEL T. STANLEY, 32

ELVIRA STANLEY, 40

DAVID, 87, father

FATIMA, 73, mother

PATSY DILL, 80, aunt (This was MARTHA, who had first married a

Weathington.)

On January 7, 1886, WILLIAM married MARY NANCY ELIZABETH KIRKLAND, twenty

years his junior. They had five children:

EARL, born 12/1/1886, died 3/4/1967, married (1) ALMA BRAWNER, sister of

NELLIE BRAWNER, (2) LOUELLA BOLIN FRANKS. Their children were CHESTER BOLIN

STANLEY, CLYDE PAGE STANLEY, RUTH STANLEY. ERVIN, born 11/26/1888, died

9/28/1980, married NELLIE LEE BRAWNER. See following.

VERNON, born 8/2/1892, died 6/1959, married HATTIE PUTMAN. Their children

were: VERNON, VIRGIL, and BOBBIE SHIRLIE STANLEY (male). VERNON and HATTIE

were tragically murdered in their home.

MYRTLE OMA, born 9/4/1895, married GUY K. HORTON. Their children were:

GUYRENE, DOROTHY MYRTLE, and BETTIE EVELYN HORTON. FRED CARLTON, born

11/30/1902, married BEULAH MAYE HOLLIS. Their children were: FRED CARLTON

JR., and JAN PHILIP STANLEY.

The 1900 Johnson County, Texas census shows:

WM. H. STANLEY, born Aug. 1842, age 57

NANCY E., born July, 1862, age 37

EARL, born Dec. 1886, age 13

IRVIN, born Nov. 1888, age 11

WILLIAM HENRY died in 1927. After his death, NANCY ELIZABETH moved to

Lubbock and lived with her son, CARLTON, until her own death in 1952, at age

90. Her body was shipped back to Johnson County for burial beside her

husband in Caddo Cemetery, west of Joshua. Obituaries from local papers

follow:

"Friday, April 1, 1927. W.H. STANLEY dies at old home Thursday. W.H.

STANLEY, age 85 years died Thursday morning at 4 o'clock at his home ten

miles north of Cleburne on the old Fort Worth Road. While very advanced in

age Mr. Stanley had been enjoying his usual health and the day before his

death when he complained of not feeling well and the next morning he expired

at the home stated. Funeral services probably will be held at the family

residence for Mr. Stanley and the remains will be interred at Old Caddo Friday afternoon, the

exact hour of services not having yet been determined owing to the expected

arrival of members of the family."

"Friday, May 22, 1952. Mrs. LEZZIE STANLEY, 90, died Thursday in Lubbock,

the Caddo cemetery under the direction of Crosier-Pearson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were J.B._____, MARK DEASON, W.A. KELLY, EVERT RAY, JIM SIMS and

T.F. PARKER."

ERVIN STANLEY

ERVIN was born November 16, 1888, in Johnson County, Texas. He married

NELLIE LEE BRAWNER on August 1, 1914. The couple lived on a farm west of

Joshua, and had four children, JESS WILLARD, ARTIE LOUISE, NELL, and ANDY.

When his brother, VERNON, and VERNON'S wife HATTIE, were murdered, ERVIN

made many trips to Fort Worth to prod the investigation on its way. He even

attempted to do some investigating himself, asking questions of people who

knew the couple, trying to find out some bit of information that might help

solve the case. The brutal murders weighed heavily on his mind for many

years, but unfortunately, the case was never solved.

NELLIE died on February 8, 1980, of a stroke. ERVIN said on the day of his

wife's death that he would not live another six months without her. He died

one month later than his prediction, on September 28, 1980. Both are buried

at Caddo cemetery west of Joshua, Texas.

22.  SANDS4 STANLEY (SANDS3, JONATHAN2 STANDLEY, GEORGE1) was born Abt. 1742 in North Carolina, and died November 19, 1799 in Darlington County, South Carolina.  He married ZILPHA EDWARDS Abt. 1759 in North Carolina.  She was born Abt. 1740 in Jones County, North Carolina, and died March 31, 1808 in Darlington County, South Carolina.

Notes for SANDS STANLEY:

From "Sands Stanley of the Pee Dee Valley", Haywood A. Stanley (1978):

SANDS STANDLEY --  Born before 1742.  About 1759 he married Zilpha Edwards.  We believe Zilpha was born about the same time in the general vicinity of Jones County in eastern North Carolina.  Sands died Nov. 19, 1799; Zilpha died Mar. 31, 1808.

The name Zilpha occurs four times in Sands' will in 1796.  In DAR application National #486112, it is spelled Zilphah.  Sands' son, Thomas, in his will in 1813, spelled it Zilpha.  Most historians seem to favor Zilpha.  The name Sands is occasionally spelled Sans, as in one of the records quoted in this book.  The name Standley occurs in many early Darlington County records.  About 1812 they began to drop the "d" and it soon became only Stanley.  It was found both ways for about two generations.

In 1930, Sarah Amanda Stanley, a fourth generation of our Sands Stanley, told her nephew, James S. Stanley that "two brothers, Sands and Sims Stanley, came from Scotch-Irish and settled on the coast of North Carolina, near the Virginia line."  An inquiry to authorities at Windsor, County seat of Bertie County, NC, on the coast 20 miles from the Virginia border failed to produce any definite information.

Records show that Zilpha Edwards had sisters: Winnifred Edwards; Nancy Shephard, Pitt Cty., NC; Molly Hill, Lenoir- Cty.,NC; Elizabeth, m Blaney Harper, Greene Cty,NC; Polly, m William Murphy, Washington, NC; and Sally, m John Heath, Washington, NC.  Also brothers: William, Cullen, Henry, Theophilus and Thomas Edwards; in that area.

Public records of Dobbs (now Craven) County, NC were destroyed by fire. However, we know Sands Stanley was in Dobbs Cty., 1769-1783, before moving to Darlington, SC.

Many Stanleys of Virginia and North Carolina were of the Friends Faith (Quakers).  Many records of Quakers are available, but an extended search of these records failed to associate Sands or Sims Stanley with the Virginia or North Carolina Quakers.

In Revolutionary Accounts of Cancelled Vouchers filed at N. C. Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, North Carolina:

"New Bern Dist:rict - No. 218

This may certify that SANDS STANLEY of Dobbs County was allowed the sum of four thousand and thirty-nine pounds for sundries as (food and other supplies).  Voucher rendered and filed April 178_"

"New Bern District - No. 869

This may certify that SANDS STANLEY is allowed the sum of twenty-six pounds for a horse and saddle. -Dated March 27, 1783 North Carolina."

Sands is listed in -the Daughters of American Revolution Index as follows:

"STANLEY, SANDS, born c I742, died after Feb. 26, 1796, married Zilpha Edwards - Patriotic Service - N. C.

Mary Allen Files McCormick, National No. 527611, used the two above vouchers in her application for DAR membership which was approved Sep. 11, 1967.  Mrs. McCormick was a direct descendant of Sands Stanley through his daughter, Sarah (S-C), Mrs. William Witherington.

23.  SHADRACK4 STANLEY (SANDS3, JONATHAN2 STANDLEY, GEORGE1) was born Abt. 1750 in Dobbs County, North Carolina, and died Aft. 1830 in Marengo Co., Alabama.  He married (1) PENINNAH JORDAN Abt. 1780 in Wilkes County, Georgia, daughter of CHARLES JORDAN and MARTHA.  She was born Abt. 1760 in Perquimans area, North Carolina, and died Abt. 1820 in Gwinnett County, Georgia.  He married (2) 'UNKNOWN' MOON Aft. 1820 in Alabama.  She died in Possibly Marengo Co., AL.

Notes for SHADRACK STANLEY:

The oral tradition in Jordan Stanley's family states that Jordan's father was Shadrack Stanley.  That is supported by the family Bible of J.W. Stanley, and his contact with other family members.  That bible lists Shadrack's children as Ada, Jordan, Samuel and Stephen.  The Bible did not list James Stanley of Gwinnett Co., GA.   It also states that Shadrack married a Moon.  Land deeds from Georgia and Alabama show proximity and a relationship with John Moor. It is possible the second marriage was to a Moor.

Dates and ages for  four Shadrack Stanleys were determined by census and other records.  The known men of the name were (1) a brother of Sands Stanley Sr.  from Cheraws Dist., SC.; (2) the son of Sands Stanley from Cheraws Dist., SC.  This man was in Tattnall Co., GA and later in Alachua Co., FL; (3) the son of John Stanley from Virginia/North Carolina Quaker records; and (4) a son of John and Jerusha Fitch Stanley who resided in Wilkes County, NC.

Research by Larry Stanley and others indicates the first of these men is the most likely man to be father of Penainy Jordan's children.  It is probable that he was a brother of Sands Stanley. Sr. of Cheraws Dist., SC.  It is also probable he was a son of a Sands Stanley who had NC land transactions in 1746-1750.

The ancestry of  George Stanley (d. 1783 in Wilkes Co., GA) and Sands (d. 1796 in Cheraws Dist. SC) leads to the residence in North Carolina in the early to mid-1700s.

     Historical Records ---------

February 2001, Research request to the North Carolina Division of Archives and History, Raleigh:

We have searched Treasurers and Comptrollers Papers, Revolutionary Army Accounts, Revolutionary Pay Vouchers and the Colonial Records of North Carolina___ without finding Shadrack Stanley.

During the late 1700s, particularly after 1780, the name Shadrack Stanley appeared in Georgia. Later records showed they both hailed from old Dobbs County, North Carolina. The uncle Shadrack was in Georgia by 1782 for the birth of his first son, Jordan Stanley. The nephew Shadrack was in Darlington, South Carolina from about 1783 when his parents (Sands and Zilpha) moved there. He was in South Carolina for the 1790 census, but that does not mean he would be absent from Georgia records.

Because they both resided in old Washington County, Georgia it is difficult to determine correct assignment for the various historical records.  However, one man remained in the northeast part of the state in Wilkes, Lincoln and Jackson counties.  The other resided in Washington, Tattnall, Montgomery and Liberty counties to the southeast.  There is no known evidence to place the uncle Shadrack in the southern part of Georgia or otherwise geographically close to the nephew.  Some of the included North Carolina and Georgia references could apply to either man.  An attempt was made here to assign records according to the location, north or south, in old Washington County.

Inspection of early maps of Washington County reveal the location of Buffalo Creek, Williams Swamp Creek and Sandy Run.  The area described, bound on the east by the Little Ogeechee River, is found at the southeast of today's Hancock County to the south and east of Sparta, and the northeast of today's Washington County.  Of further interest is that the South Fork of the Little Ogeechee is also found within this description.

The description for the Third District Militia indicates the area to the north of the Fifth Company Militia District. And it states the "Green County Line wherein the saide line crosses Buffelow" north of Sandy Run. This is a clear indication that in 1793 Greene County included the part of today's Hancock County where Sparta is located.

The book "Land Deed Genealogy of Hancock County, Georgia" has two entries naming Shadrack Stanley, and apparently indicating two separate pieces of property:

8th September 1794. Shadrack Stanley of Washington county to Miles Rachael (Rachell) of Hancock County for the sum of forty pounds money for a tract of land in said County, late Washington County now Hancock, containing one hundred fifty acres, said land granted to Shadrack Stanley on 30th December 1788. Land excepting three or four acres cut off by Ruthaf(illegible) line. Wit: Peter Boyle, J. P. and Jno. S(illegible).

3rd January 1799.  William Cureton of Hancock County to Nehemiah Smith of same place  for the sum of one thousand dollars for a tract of land containing two hundred acres in Hancock County formerly Washington County, on Little Ogeechee and adjoining vacant land at the time of the survey, adjoining Shadrack Stanley's land and by McClendon's and the Little Ogeechee , granted to Shadrack Standley on 19th April 1790. Wit: H. Chandler and Barrett Brewer. Reg.: 24th April 1800.

As to where Shadrack Stanley lived and when, it is necessary to link the residence of Dempsey Jordan to the birthplace of Jordan Stanley, James Stanley, et al.  Shadrack Stanley showed up in the same area as Dempsey Jordan in Greene and Talliafero counties in old Defacto Wilkes County; and Charles Jr. in Lincoln, Jackson and Gwinnett counties. The earlier locations for Charles Jordan Sr. were St. Paul Parish, Wilkes and Warren County. Washington/Wilkes/Warren is a close area and includes the location where Charles Jordan Sr. was killed in 1780.  Shadrack's land on the Little Ogeechee places all of them in near proximity.  It is important to note that Hancock County was formed 12/17/1793 from Greene and Washington; and, Warren County was formed 12/19/1793 from Columbia, Hancock, Richmond and Warren.

" Remembering that until 1823 Maine was still part of Mass, and most of the

original settlers of maine first started out in what is still Mass. They have

roots in what is still Mass. Some of the siblings stayed in Mass. Some went

north into what is now Maine. Some went south and west to other states. Prior

to New York becoming the primary point of entry for immigrants Mass.was a

major entry point. My father in law's family (Wells) for instance started out

in Mass. Then his branch headed south and settled in Georgia. By the Civil War

they had become true southerners and fought on the southern side. They still

have distant relatives and common ancestors in Mass, and Maine."

Notes for DANIEL MCCAY:

According to the publication, The Martin Stanley Mc Cay and Martha Collins Mc Cay Family Genealogy by ?, Daniel Mc Cay was the son of Thomas Mc Cay and a grandson of William Mc Cay or William Thomas Mc Cay of Scotland.

According to family tradition he was born in mid-December of 1756 in Scotland.  He had red hair, was 6 feet, 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion.  A Daniel Mc Cay arrived in New York in 1773 and family tradition says he did arrive in New York with ten gold guineas (about $25.00) in his pocket.

According to this book, Daniel was 16 years of age and wanted to go to America and his mother finally agreed to let him go with his Uncle Peter Mc Cay, her husband's brother or uncle.  Other stories have circulated that he wanted to come to America to see where his father, Thomas, was buried.

Keep in mind that Ruth Margaret (Cook) McDaniel has said that her Mc Cay ancestor came over during the RW and then returned because he liked America.  This would be a compressed view of the same story and lends credence to the fact that some ancestor had come from Scotland about the time of the RW.

At any rate, Daniel did serve in the RW and his military record was in "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the RW".  He joined the American Army (not fighting as a British soldier as Mom-Ruth McDaniel- thought) on 19 April 1775 at Lexington and Concord under Major Bradish in Col. Finny's Regiment from the province of Maine.

During the winter of 1777-1778, Daniel served under General George Washington at Valley Forge.  Beginning in January 1780, Daniel was Sergeant-Major under Captain Sylvanus Smith and Colonel Timothy Bigelow. In 1781 he apparently was a sergeant under Captain Smith and Colonel Rufus Putnam at West Point.  He had been transferred from the Massachusetts 15th Regiment to the 5th with Smith.  As of January 10, 1781, Daniel was 24 years and one month old.  His record continued until February 1782 when he was at Garrison West Point.

Daniel had been wounded in hip in 1778 when he was on a gunboat on Lake Champlain and a gun burst.  That wound was sewed up and then he was wounded again at Saratoga with injuries to his left breast and right knee.

After the war, Daniel migrated  to Spartenburg County, SC and then to Pendleton County where he filed for a RW pension on 25 October 1814.  He stated in his application that he was formerly of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the part that became Maine.  He needed financial assistance to support himself and a nearly blind wife and four small children.   He was finally granted two-thirds of an Ensign's pension but it is believed he died shortly after completing the application in 1816.

Here is what I have in computer so far.  I'm still weeding through. I still have to organize this data better. Some things are in twice. I have not taken anything from your site as yet. The three of us working on this, Tenny, Russ Henderson, and me are not certain that the Shadrack (son of Sands) is the one who came to Fl. Things point to it being his son Shadrack and other things point to it being him (as the 1830 census).  We know that Shadrack was in the Patriot War for sure. The Shadrack born abt. 1761 would have been rather old for this and if indeed he did marry Rebecca Grubbs, one Shadrack was in Fl. at that time. Thanks for you help, Elaine

Shadrack Standley, having moved to Darlington, S.C. before Aug. 12, 1783, was issued the following land grants. Total grants 540 acres.

(1) Sep. 20, 1784...200 acres on Swift Creek.  Bk. No. 1, page 96..Surveyed Oct. 28, & recorded Nov. 22, 1784.

(2) Jan. 25, 1787...230 acres on Indian Branch, Bk. No. 2, page 13, Surveyed Feb. 21, & recorded May 21, 1787

(3) Oct. 2, 1794...110 acres on east side of Indian Creek, Surveyed Oct. 3, 1794, recorded___?

Shadrack Standley, oldest son of Sands Standley, served under General Francis Marion (the swamp fox) in 1782 as a private for 30 days and claimed compensation for this service on Aug. 12, 1783.  He would have been about 21 years of age at that time. (Sands Standley of the Pee Dee Valley, Haywood Standley) Also taken from original Rev. Audited Account of Shadrack Standley from the SC Archives.. order#7384..AA 7302.     The 1790 Census S.C. showed that he had at that time 6 boys and two girls. (Haywood Stanley)

Shadrack is not listed in the 1800 SC Census.

After the close of the Rev. War, settlers began locating in Tattnall Co. territory, and especially along the Altamaha and Ohoopee Rivers. Most of all the early settlers were from S.C.  The county government was said to have been carried on in the house of Zachariah Cox until 1807 when a courthouse was built on the west side of the Ohoopee River about 300 yds. from Sheppard's bridge.  One of the builders of this first Tattnall Co. Courthouse is said to have been Shadrack Standley.

In the last decade of the eighteenth century, during their war against France, Britain and her ally Spain, preyed upon US shipping -- impressing seamen, capturing ships and confiscating cargo.  The United States levied a claim against Spain for part of the damages suffered.  If Spain were to cede the Spanish Territories of East and West Florida, this claim would be considered paid.  If Spain did not cede the territories, and the United States were to somehow acquire the Floridas, the claim would not then be pursued.

In 1803, the United States purchased Louisiana from France.  Not clearly defined was where the eastern boundary of Louisiana ended and where the western boundary of Florida began. The Spanish presence in the Floridas was limited to Mobile,  Pensacola, St. Augustine and Fernandina.  The remainder of the territory was home to roaming bands of Indians and land-hungry citizens of the southern U.S.

Without the approval of Congress, U. S. President James Madison and his Secretary of State James Monroe schemed to acquire West Florida by disputing where the eastern boundary of Louisiana was and annexing East Florida by settling the area and having the residents ask to become part of the United States.  As an early result of this scheme hatched in early 1811, on 12 March 1812, a group of armed Georgians crossed the St. Marys River in East Florida and marched on Fernandina.  The expectation was that Fernandina would be overrun, the United States would provide immediate support and the Georgian "Patriots" reinforced by federal troops would capture St. Augustine and thus be the revolutionary government of Florida.  Other than federal gunships standing by off Amelia Island, no U.S. aid was forthcoming. Although months later, a contingent of US troops entered Florida to provide order, acceptance of the Patriots' declaration of independence from Spain and request for annexation by the United States was accepted by Congress.

On June 18th 1812 war with Great Britain was declared.  Rumors of occupation of Florida by British troops offered another opportunity to invade and annex.  Congress, dominated by the northern states, chose to attempt to acquire Canada instead.  In January 1814, with Florida still a Spanish possession, Georgians came deep into the territory.  On a prairie near King Payne's town a fort was built and The District of Elotchaway of the Republic of East Florida was established. A message signed by the residents was sent to President Madison requesting that Elotchaway be accepted as a territory of the Union.  This offer was not accepted.

On 24 December 1815, a peace treaty was signed with Britain.  With ratification on 16 February 1816, the war was officially over.  No longer was protecting Florida from foreign occupation a rationale for U.S. invasion.  In 1817, Indian depredations provided excuse for Andrew Jackson to invade Florida.  While occupying part of Florida, 1819 negotiations with Spain resulted in purchase for five million dollars of outstanding debt. Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821.

Shadrack Standley is recorded several times during this period:  as a land owner along the St. Mary's River 1800-1821, as a defender of Fernandina, selling property in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1813, as a soldier on the Altamaha River in Georgia in 1814, and as a 1814 signer at Ft. Mitchell in Elotchoway.

On 30 October 1813 in Tattnall County, Georgia, Shadrack Standley, Sr. of Tattnall County to Shadrack Standley, Jr. of Tattnall County for one dollar sold 150 acres of land in Tattnall County bounded by Brunson's line, Big Watermelon Creek, Little Watermelon Creek and Shadrack Standley, Sr. Signed: Shadrick [sic] Standley.  Witnesses: Burell G. Whittington and Stephen Matlock.  Recorded 11 November 1911.

Shadrack's son Shadrack came to Fl. with the group of 101 men at Ft. Mitchell (note it is not known for sure at this time if it was Shadrack or his son Shadrack (EC) on the lake at Gainesville, Fl.  The men were suppose to be given 500 acres of land and supplies for a year.  Shadrack was a surveyer. After three months the Indians killed their leader Harris.  Spain objected and the men had to leave.  The men went back to Ft. St. Mary's Ga. (McLelland)  This was part of the Patriot War.

"The Republic of East Florida was established in 1811 in the vicinity of Fernandina, despite tacit disapproval by the Spanish, and a constitution was adopted on July 17, 1812. ... "  (Roberts)

On Jan. 16, 1814 the Patriots stopped at Payne's old town in Alachua and two days later began the construction of a fort which they named in honor of former Gov. Mitchell.  (McLelland)  It stood app. 100 miles south by southwest of Coleraine, Ga. Within seven miles of Fort Mitchell lay a large lake.  The block house at Ft. Mitchell was built on a prairie which was seven or eight miles wide and twenty long.  (Patrick)

After the Patriots had established themselves on the former Indian land, they assembled on Jan. 25, 1814, as a legislative body. Buckner Harris was confirmed as "Director", Francis R. Sanchez became president of the legislative council and James Dell was the "Colonel Commandant" of the military force. The assembled Patriots declared their community a continuation of the 1812 Rev. force and entitled their country "The District of Eloctchaway of the Republic of East Florida".  (Patrick)

"  ... On January 25, 1814, the Republic of East Florida was ceded to the United States at a convention held at Fort Mitchell, situated on Lake Bryant, Marion County, about 18 miles east of Ocala.  The fort, named for Governor David B.  Mitchell of Georgia, was a two-story blockhouse erected in January 1814 by Georgia militia Colonel Buckner Harris with 150 settlers to protect an American settlement in defiance of Spanish officialdom. ..." (Roberts) Lake Bryant is in the Ocala National Forest 16 miles ESE of modern-day Ocala and is crossed at the nornern end by SR40.

"The settlement collapsed after Harris was killed by Indians and the settlers returned to Georgia.  The  fort was burned shortly afterward by possibly the same Indians." (Roberts)

In the War of 1812, Shadrack Stanley was a private in Captain John R. Blackmon's Company, Tenth Battalion (Tattnall County), Second Brigade (General Samuel Byrne's), First Division, Georgia Militia.  The last of his enlistments was for one month and twenty-two days from January tenth to March tenth, 1814, under command of Lieutenant Edmond Page Wester at stationed at Fort James on Milligan's Bluff Pain's Landing , on the Altamaha river , two miles above the mouth of Beard's Creek , for the protection of the frontier against Indian attack, the "frontier" being the Altamaha River.  As a private, Shadrack's pay was 8 dollars per month.

In 1815 Shadrack was given 300 acres on the St. Mary's River in Fl by the King of Spain.  When the English took over they tried to take Shadrack's land.  He went to court and won his 300 acres, waste land and they had to give him the 500 acres promised him at Ft. Mitchell. (McLelland) East Fl. was attractive to Americans.  Opportunist crossed the St. Mary's River boundary at will.  Due to its proximity to Ga. and the Carolinas, the impact of settlers was felt initially in the area between the St. Mary's and St. Johns Rivers.

Shadrack Standley moved to the Territory of East Florida settling near the St. Mary's River.  Governor Coppinger ordered G. J. F. Clarke to distribute lands to all who contributed to the defense of Fernandina in 1817.  Shadrack Standley claimed title to 300 acres of land on the St. Mary's River bounded to the north by the river, to the east by Charles Love, and to the south and west by vacant lands.  Survey made by George Clarke 10 December 1817 in conformity of the royal order of 29 March 1815.  Shadrack Standley claimed to be in actually possession of the land and was at the time of the cession and that he was a citizen of the United States and a resident of East Florida.  This Spanish grant was later confirmed by the board of commissioners reviewing land grants which had existed prior to January 1818. Confirmation was given December 20, 1824.  In October 1828, Shadrack Standley also claimed 640 acres which he lived on and cultivated before and during 1818.  He claimed he had occupied the land since 1800.  He was then 21 years of age and head of a family with 3 or 4 negroes and a number of children.  The claim was rejected as the deadline for filing had expired.

On 15 August 1815 in Tattnall County, Georgia, Shadrack Standley, Sr. of East Florida to Jesse and John Standley of East Florida for one dollar sold 480 acres of land in Tattnall County bounded by Stephen Matlock, P. Standley and the Altamaha River.  Signed: Shadh Standley. Witnesses: Stephen Matlock and Ezekl Stafford.  Recorded 9 November 1911.  The deed was entered in probate on 14 March 1829.  Recorded 9 March 1911.

On October 10, 1820 Shadrack Standley was a signer on a petition to the Governor from "The Inhabits of the St. Mary's-St. John's District for the "Organization of a Municipality"

On 15 June 1822 on the St. Johns River, Florida, Shadrack Standley signed a Memorial to Secretary of State regarding making Jacksonville a port of entry.

In 1825 in Alachua County, Florida, Shaderick Stanley [sic] signed a petition against the indian agent for allowing indians to roam.

On 10 February 1828, in Alachua County, Florida, Shadrack Standley was an administrator of the estate of William Standley, deceased.

The 1830 federal census of Alachua County,  Florida near Courthouse/Santa Fe River lists Shadrack Standley as head of household of one free white male age 20-30, one free while male 70-80 years old and one free white female between 70-80 years old. On 25 December 1830, in Alachua County, Florida, Shadrack Standley signed a petition to the president to retain Governor Duval.

extend inland.  If necessary to prevent empty spaces, he was to increase the frontage and correspondingly decrease the depth.

On 20 January 1829, the Commissioners of the Land Office in St. Augustine published its final report on the land claims of East Florida. Included was Shadrack Standley's claim for Florida lands owed him when the area was still

under Spanish rule.  Claim number 13 of Abstract number 6 was Shadrack Standley's claim for 640 acres of land on the St. Mary's River. The Commissioners wrote:  "This would have been a good claim had it been filed

sooner.  It was presented here October 1828.  The evidence is this:  That claimant occupied the land on St. Mary's river in the year 1800, and continued there until the year 1821; that he was then 21 years of age, and

the head of a family consisting of a number of children and three or four negroes.  The witnesses, J. D. Hart and John Warren, never heard of his claiming any land under the Spanish or British government." The time for

filing claims had expired 1 November 1827.  (Other entries when speaking of heads of families refer to "wife" as well as children. I conclude that Shadrack was wifeless as some point during the dates mentioned in this claim

and others: 1800 & 1821 and 1815 & 1824 -JRH)

At the end of 1824, Alachua County was organized as a political unit of the new Territory of Florida.  The Seminole inhabitants of the Alachua region had recently been ordered to a reservation, and land was available

there for white settlers.  Early in 1826, a post office was established in the area called "Dell's P.O."  It derived its name from the Dell brothers, who had first visited the Alachua region during the "Patriot War" (1812-1814) and had later returned to settle there. The Indians were living south of Alachua Co. in 1826, but there were continuing disturbances in the area.  Hunger often drove the Seminoles outside the reservation for food. In 1828, the settlement near Dell's P.O. was officially made the Alachua County seat and named "Newnansville" in honor of a Patriot War hero, Daniel Newnan. Newnansville became the junction of several important trails through

frontier Florida, including the Bellamy Road, a cross-Florida route authorized by Congress in 1824 as the first federal road in the new territory.  In 1832, when Columbia County was formed, it included Newnansville.  Newnansville was returned to Alachua County when the Santa Fe River became the county line in 1835.  During the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), hundreds of displaced refugee settlers were settled at settled at Newnansville and also at Fort Gilleland, a nearby military post built in 1836.

After the hostilities were concluded, Newnansville prospered as a commercial center for the expanding Middle Florida frontier.  The chief products of the area were corn, cotton, and after the Civil War, citrus. Except for a few years between 1832 and 1839, Newnansville served as the Alachua County seat until 1854.  In that year, the political center of the county was moved to the new railroad town of Gainesville.  During the next three decades, Newnansville slowly declined in population and importance. The community was dealt a final blow in 1884, when the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad bypassed it.  A new town, Alachua, grew up near that

railroad. As the years passed, the residents of Newnansville moved there or elsewhere. By the 1970's only a few traces remained of the former community, most notable of which is the Newnansville Historic Cemetery.
