Notes for Naomi Kathryn STANLEY: The following letter was received from Naomi Stanley Anderson, one of Byron's daughters. The writer has talked by telephone several times with his other daughter, Mary Stanley Emmett.
I appreciate your efforts in getting the Stanley History in print. Hopefully you will pursue stories and historic facts from my aunt Eunice Robinson (Aunt Gib), Joseph Walter Stanley's daughter, and Wilma Steed, my father's double first cousin. I have one of my grandfather's Bibles. Here is some information that appears in it:
Joseph Walter Stanley. Born 9/25/1877. Died 6/2/1964. married 12/25/1904 to
Roxie Virginia McGhee. Born 3/15/1886. Died 4/20/1965.
I remember stories being told about hiding apples in the attic. When the Yankees came, they smelled them. My aunts could tell you funny stories about my Dad, and a few about J. Walt. I remember my grandfather with happy thoughts.
As you would imagine, J. Walt was a pillar of the community. He helped build Fairview Methodist Church. He farmed, had a syrup mill, and raised chickens.
My father, Byron, donated the land on which the church clubhouse was built. He ran the General Store and bought produce in Atlanta for all the grocery stores in Centre. He also sold chickens to packing plants in Atlanta. It kept many families in money through the winter I will tell you that long story later.
As for my family, we have moved around. My husband, Andy, was a marine pilot for the first five years of marriage. He served for eight years and got out in 1964 as a Captain. He has worked for United Airlines for the past twenty-three years as a pilot - and finally made Captain there, too!
I have taught school and coached swim teams since college.
