Notes for Charles Vinson BROWNLEE: A great amount of information is found in the book: Vincent Brownlee of Gwinnett County by Effie Brownlee Jackson. Many people, including Louie W. Stanley, contributed to her work. Most important to this research is the connections of the Brownlee and Rawlins families.

The Brumley Clan was of Scotch-Irish origin. The name means "Dweller at Brown Meadow." Vincent kept this version of the name through the 1850s. Threafter, he and his sons were known by the Brownlee spelling.
Vinson Brownlee was born probably in Abbeville County, South Carolina about 1797 and died in Gwinnett County, GA about 1880. History records the name to be of Scotch origin from the County of Kincardine, the actual meaning being "brown meadow." His first wife was named Elizaberth Andrews and was born about 1807. His second wife was named Parthenia, born April 7, 1837 and died September 16, 1903. Both wives were native Georgians.
Three of Vinson and Elizabeth's sons served in Company B of the 42nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteers from Gwinnett County during the Civil War. They were Milton, John C. and Thomas C. Thomas C. Brownlee die in the service of the Confederacy at Vicksburg. MS in March 1862.
The marriage of Vinson and Parthenia Gresham produced one daughter, Ida F. Brownlee.
Additional information was obtained from James Hall of Hendersonville, North Carolina in March 2001. He posted a website at http://www.brinet.com/~jhall/records.htm with his family connections.
Notes of his correspondence follow: " My Grandmother Bennie Jewell Brownlee Jakes (1896-1984) was a daughter of John Marion Brownlee (1858-1925) and Beulah Alberta Fambrough (1860-1942). She was the granddaughter of Warren D. Brownlee (1832-1894) and Elizabeth Jane Lanier (1835-1918). Warren being a son of Charles Vinson Brownlee (1797, Shoals Junction, SC - 1885) and Elizabeth Andrews (1810, Franklin Co., GA - 1876).
(The name) Charles came from a written record that John Marion Brownlee had written about his grandparents. I received most of my Brownlee information from my grandmother as she was as sharp as a tack up until her death. I have since tried to locate the original report but grandmother Jakes had 7 children and many grandchildren etc. My mother and her brothers have all died and I only have two aunts. Both are in their 80's and although the oldest is still very sharp the other one is in very bad mental condition. Unfortunately my oldest aunt was never interested in family history so she doesn't have any recollection of many events etc. I've contacted my cousins and no one will admit having the letter from John Marion. I've tried to assure them I only want a copy but so far no luck. I found one cousin who has the John Marion family Bible and I'm trying to either see it or if she will let me have it. I'll let you know either way."
