Will. Dated 1 May 1853. PROBATED 1 Aug 1853. To my wife Mateldia Smith. To my daughters Rebecca Jane Smith, Lucinda Smith, Matilda Smith. To my sons Bartholomew Smith, Leonidas Smith, Ewel Smith. Sons, Richard and Bartholomew Smith, appointed executors. Signed Isac M. Smith. Wit. W. W. Cotten. Scott County Court Minutes, 1850-1855, pp 300-301, 326; 1866-1869, pp 96, 132. (Source: Lemasters, Paul, Wills, Scott County, Tennessee: 1850-1927, Publisher: Scott County Historical Society, 1991) The date of this will brings into question the death date listed previously of 1867 (which came from Clarence and Lenna Maye Smith's research). The 1853 death date does help to explain why Isaac does not appear in the 1860 census.

Notes for M
We know Isaac's wife's name was Matilda. Earlier research by Clay Smith and Clarence and Lenna Maye Smith located the marriage record of Isaac Smith and Matilda Elliot in Washington County VA. The 1850 census also appears to list the marriage year as 1818.

Researcher Sheila Strunk disagrees that Matilda was an Elliot. Strunk writes in her website at ( that Isaac M. Smith married Matilda Rose HIGGENBOTHAM in Whitley County KY on Jan 16, 1823. She quotes as her source: Tri-County Early Marriages; Knox, Laurel, Whitley Counties KY; Author: Carol Hopper; Publication: 1987. Additionally, Early Marriages of Whitley County KY by Charley Maynard Cornelius lists Isaac Smith m Matilda ROSE, daughter of Angus ROSS on 1/16/1823 (license 1/11/1823). Having looked at other Whitley County records, I am inclined to believe that this was Matilda Ross, rather than Rose, since Angus Ross was listed in the wills, deeds and tax records.

If Matilda was an Elliot, then she might have been the daughter of Bartholomew Elliot Sr, listed in 1840 Campbell County TN census on same page (p. 317) as an Isaac Smith family:
Barthol Elliot Sr
1 male under 5
1 male age 70-80
1 female under 5
1 female age 50-60

Also on same page (p 317) of 1840 Campbell County TN census:
Bartholomew Elliot (perhaps a brother)
2 males under 5
1 male age 30-40
1 female 5-10
1 female 15-20
1 female 30-40
