Notes for T
HOMAS BURCHFIELD:
Much of the information about the Burchfields comes from the book, The Families of Cades Cove 1821-1936 by A. Randolph Shields. According to this source, Thomas Burchfield came from Scotland with his first wife, Sarah Leginwood (or Leatherwood). After she died, he married Mary M., who was either full-blooded Cherokee or had been kidnapped as a child and raised by the Cherokees. They had at least 3 boys: Robert, John Noah and Wilson.

From another book I found in the library in Murphy NC, Old Buncombe County Heritage - NC, Vol II, p. 342: The Thomas Burchfield home is among the oldest records of McDowell County, dating back to 1760. Their daughter, Lydia Burchfield (7/24/1763-10/19/1846) was brutally scalped by the Cherokees. Skin, hair and bone were removed to her eyebrows. She lived and married Andrew Hunter (1765-1848) and was very respected by the Cherokee until her death at age 83.

From the same source, p 235: Approximately 1774-6 "Edward Leatherwood and relatives Thomas Birchfield, Edward Hyatt, Reuben Walker and Aquilla Burns were neighbors in 6th Co., west Bridgewater Twp, on the south bank of Catawba eight miles above Morganton". Edward ("Ned") was the son of John (b ca 1730) and Sarah "Sally" Hunt. John Leatherwood's father was also John (1/29/1685 - ?) and was the son of John and Martha Leatherwood, who sailed from Plymouth, England, around 1680 to Annapolis, MD. Another son, Samuel (b 1681), also accompanied them. In addition to Ned (b ca 1754), John and Sally Hunt Leatherwood had Sarah who married Thomas Birchfield, Hannah who married Edward Hyatt, and a daughter who married a Burns. Ned married Elizabeth Walker whose mother was full-blooded Cherokee.

From Volume I of the same source, p 226: Andrew and Lydia Burchfield Hunter lived where Lake Tahoma now is. Their daughter Elizabeth married Israel Leander Simmons and had a daughter, Lydia Louisa, who married John Hosea Hemphill.
