The Ramsbottoms of America came from England. Some of them came by way of Ireland or Scotland, but the homeland was Lancashire, England. In the 1900 census of the United States, we find at least 63 families of Ramsbottoms with at least one of the parents born in the British Isles.

The Parish Register Societies of the British Isles are preserving, recording, indexing and publishing the parish records which are essential to family research in England. Parish registers began in the reign of Henry VIII, when by a royal injunction, published by Cromwell, the Vicar General, were ordered to keep registers of all Christenings, burials and weddings, but this was not always carried out due to the fact that it was believed to be the prelude to a new tax.

In 1630, Richard of Ramsbottom is first listed. Later his listing becomes Richard Ramsbottom, Gentleman, indicating that he was a significant landholder. Richard died June 13, 1644 leaving a family of at least six children, of whom two died within the year. Thereafter, Ramsbottom, the locality, appears periodically in the records.

The records indicate that the Ramsbottom families lived in an area of England bounded roughly by Manchester and Ashton on the south, Wigan and Blackburn on the west, Clitheroe, Skipton and Harrogate on the north, and Leeds and Wakefield on the east. This area is largely in Lancashire, but on the northeast spills over intoYorkshire, the fount of two of the very successful Ramsbottom families of America.

The Ramsbottoms certainly were weavers; where occupations is mentioned, they were weavers, farmers or clergy men. It is clear that the relatively large immigration of Ramsbottoms in the period 1830-1880 was skilled craftsmen associated with the weaving trades.
