1. Obit for Walter Beers, 11/1877, Death of Dr. Beers. Ther people of S.lL. were startled and shocked last Tues. morning by the news tha Dr. W.S. Beers was dead. He had been indisposed for several days, and confined to the house a part of the time. Last Sat. he was in his store for several hours and until late on Monday was apparently feeling better. Monday evening he complained of severe nausea and he died about midnight, while in the act of vomiting. For several years Dr. Beers had been afflicted with heart disease, and it was this fatal malady that caused his death.
Walter S. Beers was born in Jefferson Co. NY in March 1833. He came to Dickinson Co. in the spring of 1866 and took a homestead on lower Gar Lake, immediately commencing the practice of his profession. For several years he was the only physician in the county. In 1867 he was elected sherriff, and served acceptably in that capacity for two years.
In the fall of 1871 he retired from the active practice of medicine and engaged in the mercantile business at Milford. In Sept. 1874, he came to SL purchased the store building now owned by J. A. Doughty, and filled it with a stock of goods. About a year ago he disposed of his general merchandise , and since that time has made a specialty of the drug trade. ? husband and father, Dr. Beers was most kind and affectionate: as a citizen and neighbor, he was genial and obliging: as a physician, careful and attentive, and as a business man, honorable, prompt and possesed of a wonderful amount of energy. He leaves a wife and three children the youngest a mere babe.
