Updated December 26, 2009

The Stansfield Family are of Norman descent and the founder of the family was Wyon Maryons, Lord of Stansfield, who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066.

As was common in those days, people took their names from the place where they lived and often the word "DE" (of or from) was inserted between their first name and the place name e.g. Robert DE Stansfield. Eventually the DE was dropped and the place name became the surname. The name Stansfield, of which there are about 40 variations of spelling, came from Stony-Field and if one visits the Calder Valley in Yorkshire/Lancashire where the Stansfields lived, it is easy to see why the name originated with many fields full of stones. Most of the variations are now extinct and exist in the older records. The main variations are now Stansfeld and Stanfield. Symon Stanfield (1635) and Lawrence Stanfield (1646) acquired Virginia land grants in Norfold and Northampton Counties of Virginia, as did Robert Stanfield who purchased a 311 acre grant in 1727 (for the sum of 35 Shillings) in Prince George County. A Stanfield also held land in Carolina Countyprior to 1730.
