Descendants of Thomas Hull

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM10 HULL (THOMAS9, WILLIAM JACKSON (UNPROVEN)8, MOSES7, SAMUEL6, SAMUEL5, SAMUEL4, JOSEPH3, THOMAS2, RICHARD1)24,25 was born 19 October 1802 in possibly Putnam County, (possibly Burke Co.) Georgia26, and died Unknown. He married NANCY ANN OLIVER 08 October 1826 in Elbert County, GA. or Marietta, GA, daughter of CALEB OLIVER and NANCY WHITE. She was born 1808, and died Aft. 1880.

Notes for W
ILLIAM HULL:
From a "Historical Genealogy On The Ancestry of Wiliam Benjamin Hull and Emily Harriett Watson Hull and Related Lines", by Dorothy Hull Shaw and Harold L. Shaw, July 1989:

William Hull (middle name may have been Benjamin) was born October 19, 1802 in Putnam Co. (possibly Burke Co.) Georgia.

Based upon several pieces of documentation and other evidences, it is reasonable to believe that William Hull married Nancy Ann Oliver in Elbert County, Georgia on October 8, 1826. Such a marriage is duly recorded there, according 'History of Elbert County, GA, 1790-1925" page 243, by John McIntosh. There is, however, as to the name "Hull" some confusion. In print, the presentation is made as "Hul(me?). There were in that County at the time a number of families by the name Hulme. However, there were none with the given name of William who married anyone named Oliver. There are other evidences that in hand-written documentation, the second "l" in the Hull name were not written. This would appear to be the case here, and that fact, coupled with the familiarity with the name Hulme in that geographical area may have caused the editorial addition of the parenthetical "me?" when the handwritten record was transcribed to print. Handwritten original says "Hulme".

Be that as it may, Nancy Ann Oliver married again in 1837 (to Matthew Peters) and brought to that marriage two small children -- a girl and a boy -- and almost indisputable legend/evidence from that point on indicates the father of these two children was William Hull.

What happened to William Hull after 1830 remains a mystery. As said, there is documentation of his marriage in 1826 (when he was 24 years old). Further, his name appears in the first Tax List of Butts County, GA., in 1828, as owning land in the same district as that of his father, Thomas. Finally, he appears in the 1830 federal census for Butts County as a separate house-hold, living alone -- no spouse, no children.

There are legends about subsequent name changes, second marriage, and the rearing of another family, by William Hull, but there is not so much as a hint that any of this is factual. It has not been learned whether or not William Hull lived past 1830.

Notes for N
ANCY ANN OLIVER:
From a "Historical Genealogy On The Ancestry of Wiliam Benjamin Hull and Emily Harriett Watson Hull and Related Lines", by Dorothy Hull Shaw and Harold L. Shaw, July 1989:

".... when in about 1837, Nancy Oliver Hull Peters married Matthew Peters she brought to that marriage a girl and a boy. The same was true for Matthew -- he also had a boy and a girl from his first marriage. This as this union began, the Matthew Peters household took form as follows:

Mathew Peters, born 1801, died 183, Married 1837, Nancy Oliver Hull Peters, born 1808, died after 1880. Children in the family:

Daughter: Hollon Peters, 10 years old.
Son, Matthew Jordan Peters, 7 years old.
Daughter Frances Elizabeth Hull, 10 years old.
Son, William Benjamin Hull, 8 years old.

Additional children, born of this marriage were as follows:
Martha Peters, born 1839
Mary A. Peters, born 1842
Andrew Jackson Peters, born 1844
James K. Peters, born 1845
Simeon C. Peters, born 1849

Also added into this household in 1849 was the infant daughter of Francis Elizabeth Hull Butler, the mother having died in that year. This infant, (Elizabeth Butler) was Nancy's granddaughter and William Benjamin Hull's niece.

Also from: From a "Historical Genealogy On The Ancestry of Wiliam Benjamin Hull and Emily Harriett Watson Hull and Related Lines", by Dorothy Hull Shaw and Harold L. Shaw, July 1989:

"....Before leaving discussion of the Peters kin, a particular historical event should be recorded here: In about 1882 a caravan, said to have consisted of 5 wagons, left Chambers and/or Tallapoosa Co., Alabama and went to Orlando. (More likely, actually went to Conway, now a suburb south of Orlando, where William Benjamin Hull was established). Known to have been in he entourage were the following:

Matthew Jordan Peters (step-brother to Wm. Benjamin Hull), his wife, Johannah and children, John (called "Boason"), Mary, Frances (called Fanny), Sarah, daughter Hollon, and son Horry.

Martha (Mattie) Peters (half-sister to Wm. B. Hull), unmarried.

Andrew Jackson Peters (half-brother to Wm. B. Hull) and likely his wife Mary and 3 children.

James K. Peters (half-brother to Wm. B. Hull), his wife, Johnnie and children: Charlie Belle, Matthew (then 12 years old and who drove one of the wagons), Mattie Eleta Perry Lee (called Parlee -- she was the mother of Ms. France V. Thomas who now lives in Alexander City, AL. and who is the Peters family historian) Lenora, James Harlan, and other small children.

And finally: "Grannie" -- Nancy Oliver Hull Peters, mother of William Benjamin Hull. She was then about 74 years old.

Of this group, only Matthew Jordan Peters and his family stayed in Florida. Matthew Jordan ("M.J.") Peters, his wife Johanna and most of their children (and their spouses) are buried in the old (Methodist Church) cemetery in the center of Conway (Orlando), Florida. From Conway Methodist Church records and by personal inventory of tomb-markers, following is a listing of those buried there:

M. J. Peters, died 16 July 1890, age 60 (this was Matthew Jordan, Born 1830).
Ionia Speer, 3 October 1898, 26 Dec 1918. (daughter of the above).
Frances R. Villeneuve, 1878, No death date. (daughter of M. J. Peters).
Lorenze S. Villeneuve, 1868-1924 (husband of Frances R.)
Vera Villneuve, 11 July 1905 - 21 August 1906 (Infant daughter of Lorenze & Frances).
Horry Peters, died 6 Sept 1884, age 11. (son of M.J. and Johanna Peters).

Note: There are records that John Peters (Boason) son of Matthew Jordan Peters was involved in purchase of cemetery lots in this location, but no evidence that he is buried there.

Returning to the 1882 entourage: After a short stay -- perhaps a few weeks or few months -- the remainder of this group returned to their former homes in Alabama. The trip southbound is said to have taken 31 days, the return, northbound, 29.

Amongst the "Collection of Letters to Simeon Benjamin Hull" in the mid-1880's, will be found letters from people in this group, after they returned to Alabama.

The date and place of death of Nancy Ann Oliver Hull Peters is not known. There is a legend that she went west to Oklahoma or Texas (she had a son in Houston) and died there.
