RANCIS MARION HULL:
Notes from Harold L. and Dorothy Hull Shaw states that Francis Marion Hull was born 5/1/1821 in Putnam Co., GA. Married (1) Sarah Dovie Davis (2) Sarah Youngblood. He died in 1889 or after. However, my own family records show his date of death (per tombstone date); and that his second wife was Mary A. Youngblood. Sarah Youngblood was the wife of Augustus Washington Hull (F. M.'s son).

E-Mail from Phyllis Hughes, Genealogist for the Hull Family Association, 1/11/1999, lists the birth date of Francis Marion Hull as 1 May 1820.

It is thought that Francis Marion Hull left Georgia and moved to Texas in about 1858.

The following notes are excerpts from correspondence from John Thomas Hull, Jr. (1998).

Although the information from the Hull Families in the U.S. Book, by Rev. William E. Hull, states the below, there is confusion about Francis Marion's second wife Sarah Youngblood - whom Rev. Hull also lists as the wife of Augustus W. Hull. I believe at this point, that Sarah Youngblood was NOT the second wife of Francis Marion Hull, but rather Mary A. was. Mary A. is listed in the Friendship Cemetery Records, Marquez, Texas, Leon County, as being the wife of F.M. Hull

From Rev. William Edgar Hull's book, page 21:
Francis Marion Hull, son of Thomas and Winnefred Evans Hull, was born in Putnam
County, Georgia 5/1/1821. He was married, according to family tradition, to Sarah Dovie
Davis in Georgia about 1841. Sarah died in Leon Co. In 1879. His second wife
was Sarah Youngblood who died in 1913. Francis Marion moved with his family
from Georgia to Texas about 1859 and lived near MT. Enterprise in Rusk county. He
later moved to Panola Co. And finally to Leon County. He was a master mechanic and a
fine cabinet worker at which he worked at odd times along with his farming interests.
The presence of this kind neighborly family has long been an uplifting influence on
the area in which they lived. He died in 1883 and is buried near Marquez. He was
the father of 10 children: John L. Hull, the eldest son was born in Putnam Co, Georgia in
1842.

Thomas Jefferson Hull, son of Francis Marion and Sarah Dovie Davis Hull, was born in
Putnam Co GA 6/22/1844. He was 16 when the family moved to Texas. At the
outbreak of the Civil War he volunteered his service to the Confederate Army. His
parole, No 629, dated at Shreveport LA July 26, 1865 reveals that he served with
Company 26, Regiment 19, Texas Military Div. He was married to Amanda Zuber,
a daughter of William Moss and Mariah Brooks Zuber, 12/18/1867 at Minden, TX.

John Thomas Hull, Jr. collected the following Census data:
"I went to the Dallas Library and found census data for F.M. Hull for 1860 (in Rusk Co.) and 1880 (in Leon Co.). This week I found census data for F.M. Hull for 1870 in Panola Co. The three censuses & a summary are below:

First of all, I am convinced that F.M. Hull had only two wives, the second being Mary A. As you will recall, In Edgar Hull's book, he states that F.M. Hull's second wife, i.e., Sarah Youngblood, died in 1913 (p. 21). As we both know from the headstone in Friendship Cemetery, Mary A. died in 1914. F.M. couldn't have married Mary after Sarah died because he had already been dead since 1883. However, I have almost positively concluded that Mary A.'s last name was Youngblood at the time of her marriage to F.M.; however, it appears to have been her name by her first marriage, and not her maiden name. I think you'll agree when you review the census data below.

Rusk Co. (MT. Enterprise P.O.), TX, 1860:
James M. Hull, 38, M, Master Mechanic, $200 (value of pers. est.), GA
Sarah Hull, 33, F, GA
John L. Hull, 17, M, Laborer, $40 (val. of pers. est.), GA
Thomas J. Hull, 14, M, GA
Augustus Hull, 10, M, GA
Josephine E. Hull, 8, F, GA
Asbury Hull, 6, M, GA
Susan A. Hull, 1, F, TX
Jepley(sp.?) J. Thompson, 30, M, Mechanic Laborer, GA

The parents are listed at the bottom of one page and the children continued on the following page. The spelling of the last name on the first page appears to be "Hall," but it is clearly "Hull" on the next page. "James" initially threw me for a loop, but this of definitely Francis Marion. I have a gg grandfather on my maternal side of the family that was named James Francis Marion Myers. There must have been someone famous with that name in those days that people named their children after. Perhaps F.M. also had this tag and later dropped the "James." In any event, the children named immediately after supports that this is the right family. Note the child listed as "Susan A." You apparently did not have her listed as a child of F.M. The "A" stands for Alice, which name she apparently went by as you will see in the 1870 census. Also, I am now convinced that F.M. had eleven children, not ten as reported by Edgar Hull. He had nine by his first wife and two by his second wife.

Panola Co., TX, 1870:
F. M. Hull, 48, M, W, Farmer, $2000 (val. of R.E.) $500 (val.of pers. est.), GA
Mary Hull, 36, F, W, Keeping House, AL
Augustus Hull, 21, M, W, Works on Farm, GA
Josephine Hull, 18, F, W, Keeping House, GA
Asbury, 15, M, W, Works on Farm, GA
Alice, 10, F, W, TX
Edgar 8, M, W, TX
Charles, 5, M, W, TX
Julia, 3, F, W, TX
Sarah Youngblood, 14, F, W, TX
Thomas Youngblood, 9, M, W, TX
Ellen Youngblood, 4, F, W, TX

The last three children are no doubt Mary's by her first marriage; hence, her married name appears to have been Youngblood. John L. Hull and Thomas Jefferson Hull are no longer in the same household. I located Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Amanda, elsewhere in Panola Co. Hence, I question the statement made by Edgar Hull on p. 22 of his book that "Thomas and Amanda Hull, for the fist eighteen years of their wedded life made their home at Pinehill in Rusk County." Another unusual fact was that F.M. and Mary Hull were reported living in one house, while their children all lived in a second (although adjacent) house. You will note that the occupation of Augustus is given, he being the oldest male and head of the household, and that Josephine, as the oldest female, was reported as "Keeping House." Augustus Hull's first wife was Sarah Youngblood and no doubt it was the Sarah reflected above. She is listed in the Panola Co. census as being 14, or approximately 7 years younger than Augustus. In the Leon Co. census in 1880, Sarah is listed as Augustus Hull's wife, but her age is reported as 26, or only five year's difference.

Leon Co., TX, 1880:
F. M. Hull, W, M, 57, Farmer, GA, VA, TN
M. A. Hull, W, F, 46, Wife, Keeping House, AL, SC, TN
Edward (Edgar?) Hull, W, M, 20, Son, Works on Farm, TX, GA, TN
C. A. Hull, W, M, 17, Son, Works on Farm, TX, GA, TN
Julia Hull, W, F, 13, Daughter, At School, TX, GA, TN
Almina Hull, W, F, 9, Daughter, At School, TX, GA, TN (sic: ELMINA Hull is the correct spelling)
Eilena Hull, W, F, 7, Daughter, At School, TX, GA, TN
Thomas Youngblood, W, M, 19 Boarder, Works on Farm, TX, GA, AL
Joseph Tull, W, M, 20, Boarder, Works on Farm

Clearly Elmina and Eilena are daughters of F.M. and Mary. Mary gave her place of birth as AL, yet the census taker listed the birth place of their mother as TN. This was clearly an error. As for Augustus, C. A., and Julia, their mother's birth place should have been listed as GA (as reflected in the 1860 census). The census taker obviously made a number of mistakes, so I'm not that alarmed by the fact he listed F.M.'s father's birthplace as VA and his mother's as TN. However, it doesn't help in providing the documentation we need.

I mentioned earlier that Augustus W. Hull's household was listed in the 1880 census in Leon Co. immediately after F.M.'s. He must have farmed a portion of F.M.'s land, or an adjacent piece of property. One thing I noted was that Augustus' son, James, was listed as their first child, 8 years of age. That would have put his birth year around 1871 (ages were supposed to be determined as of June 30 in the year of the census and since his birth date was September 20, he would not have turned to age 9 until September 20, 1880). In Edgar Hull's book on page 30, it lists James as the second son with a birth date of 1877. Edgar Hull places his marriage to Josie Heaton as having occurred in 1891. Therefore, according to Edgar, that would have made him only 14 years of age when he married, which I think you'll agree was just a tad young. It's interesting, however, that if James was born September 20, 1871, Augustus had to have married Sarah Youngblood in late 1870 or early 1871 - or perhaps they just began to "play house" a little too early, since she would have only been about 15 or 16 years old.

Now to wrap up this epistle. It appears that F.M. had nine children by his first wife, i.e., John L, Thomas J., Augustus W., Josephine E., Asbury, Susan A., Edgar, Charles, and Julia. It appears he had two children by his second wife, i.e., Almina (Elmina) and Eilena (or Eleanor). Harriet Ann Hull was not a child of F.M.'s, but rather a child of Thomas and Winnifred Evans Hull (see p. 50 of Edgar Hull's book). Notice three lines or so above the title "Harriet Ann Hull Vandigriff" on that page is listed "K. Eleanor Hull." K is the 11th letter of the alphabet and corresponds with the 11 children fathered by F.M. Hull. Since Mary A. died in 1914, there is a good possibility a death certificate was filed for her in Leon Co. (Texas began requiring death certificates in 1903). If we had her death certificate could be obtained, it may give a clue as to what her maiden name was.

John Thomas Hull, Jr., 1998

The following is a copy of letter to Simeon Benjamin Hull in 1889 from Francis Marion Hull. However, our Francis Marion Hull died in Leon Co., TX in 1883 according to his tombstone in Friendship Cemetery; that is what prompted the census research by John T. Hull, Jr., which follows this letter:

a copy of a letter written by F.M. Hull to his nephew S.B. Hull in Acworth, GA dated 12/14/1889. The letter is postmarked ELMO, TX (Kaufman County, TX). There is a typewritten copy of the letter - but also a copy of the original letter - in BEAUTIFUL script writing. Here it what it says:

Dear Nephew I again take my pen from its long resting place to write -- that you may know that I am still on top of "Terre Ferma" and I believe am getting along pretty well for an "Old Man". The only thing that I feel out of sorts about is that I am still having to bend my back over a cotton row. It rained all fall and we are just now having some pretty weather. I think I will finish picking next week - will not get rested up by Christmas - but if I get through a live I will rejoyce and be glad. I am picking on my 13th bale. I have no news of importance to write. I hope you will have a fine Christmas. I guess you want to go home and see your best girl by now ? Is Harbird Hull there, the one that was in Nebraska ---- Well as I am tired and can not think of any thing to write I will close. Write soon for I am all ways glad to get a letter from you.
I am as ever
Yours truly
F. M. Hull

Notes:
The "home" mentioned in the letter is Orlando
Note: Ed. Notes (Harold Shaw) : F.M. (Francis Marion) was S.B.'s great-uncle.

And in the cover letter from Harold Shaw, he writes this:
Lastly, about the letter from F. M. Hull to Dot's grandfather, "S.B." (Simeon Benjain Hull, b. 1867): We have been aware for the disparity of the death date of Francis Marion Hull for some time. We have a photo of the tombstone which shows "1883", whilest this letter shows that F.M. Hull was living in the late fall of 1889. Only two possibilities come to mind: (1) An error was made by the person who ordered the tombstone, or the stonecutter made a mistake, or (2) there were more than one Francis Marion Hull in Texas at that time.

Also, from John T. Hull, Jr., January 1999, e-mail: Census reports on F.M. and Thomas Hull, etc.

I went down to the Dallas library and did a few look-ups in the censuses. I found F.M. Hull in the 1850 Henry Co., GA, census, as follows:

586-586:
F. M. Hull, 28, M, Mechanic, 150 (Value of Real Est.), GA
S. Hull, 23, F, GA
R. L. Hull, 7, M, GA
T. J. Hull, 6, M, GA
A. W. Hull, 1, M, GA

A couple of observations. First of all, I couldn't find him in an index to the 1850 GA census under "Hull." He was listed under "Hall," along with another F.M., four Francis', and three Francis M.'s. However, when I looked at the actual census page, it was clearly spelled "Hull." The names and ages of the children give me some heartburn. In the 1860 census in Rusk Co., TX, the first son is listed as John L. Hull, age 17. In this census it was clearly "R. L." The age, however matches up exactly, i.e., age 7 in 1850 and age 17 in 1860. The second son, Thomas J., is listed as age 6 in the 1850 census , but as age 14 in the 1860 census. According to his tombstone, he was born June 21, 1844. So the census in 1850 would be correct, while the census in 1860 would be two years off. I can understand being off perhaps a year, but not two years. In any event, this is the F.M. Hull cited by Dave Boatman as being in the 42nd District in Henry Co. in 1850.

I also looked up Thomas Hull in the 1850 census in Cobb Co., GA. The results:

621-621:
Thomas Hull, 71, M, W, Farmer, 1,200, North Car.
Wineyford Hull, 66, F, W, Vir.

Notice the spelling of his mate's name. I guess it was accurate "phonetically." This census would tend to confirm that Thomas was born in 1779, as opposed to 1777. However, I've learned to not take census ages as "total gospel." This also points to his having been born in North Carolina.

Lastly, I looked in the 1880 census for another F.M. Hull. There was only one Hull in the 1880 census for Kaufman Co., TX - and it was an F. M. Hull, as follows:

District 40, 67-67:
Hull, F.M., W, M, 25, Farmer, KY, TN, NC
M.S., W, F, 21, Wife, Keeping house, MO, TN, TN
W.F., W, M, 1, Son, At home, TX, KY, MO

Whether this is the F.M. that wrote the letter is up to conjecture. This was obviously a relatively young man. If it was he, in fact, who wrote the letter in 1889, he would have been an "ancient" 34 or 35 years of age. Perhaps this was a son who later had his father (with the same name) move in with him. In any event, this particular F.M. Hull does not apparently have any direct connection to Georgia and the age is way off.

John T. Hull, Jr., January 1999
