Descendants of William Wilkins, Sr.

Generation No. 2

2. TOBIATHA2 WILKINS (WILLIAM1)9 was born 12 November 1808 in Choctaw Co. AL or Georgia, and died Unknown. She married JACOB ODOM 1828, son of JACOB ODOM and NANCY STUBBS. He was born 1803 in South Carolina, and died Unknown in Washington County, AL.

Notes for T
OBIATHA WILKINS:
Tobiatha Wilkins was the oldest daughter of William Wilkins and Catherine Weldon, his wife, and was married to Jacob Odom in 1828. To them were born nine children seven being men and two women. Of her sons and daughters, all were married and to them were born 42 children - Alexander heading the list with 13. Of these 42 grand-children of Tobiatha Wilkins-Odom, we could not get any definite report but from best authority there were 16 children in this fifth generation, perhaps quite a number more, and they resided from Alabama to Texas - probably the greater number being in Texas.

Children of TOBIATHA WILKINS and JACOB ODOM are:
13.      i.      ISAAC CULLEN3 ODOM, b. 1828, Barbour Co. AL; d. July 02, 1907.
      v.      JONATHAN ODOM, b. 1837.
      vi.      JACOB ODOM, b. 1839.
vii.      MARY MATILDA ODOM, b. 1844.
      viii.      HENRY ODOM, b. 1847.
ix.      CATHERINE ANNA ODOM, b. Abt. 1849.

Notes for N
ANCY WILKINS:
Nancy Wilkins was the second daughter of William and Catherine Wilkins.
She was married to Jefferson Whatley in 1830 and to them were born six sons and three daughters - all of whom reared families. This family are mostly residents of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana - and perhaps some in Arkansas and Texas.

1850 census age 40

1860 census age 51 (this information is uncertain; other researchers have not found her in the 1860
census).

1870 census age 60

1880 census age 69.

Thomas 7 M, Caroline 6 F.
In dwelling #539, next door, there was Thomas' brother: James W. Whatley 25 M, Sibette 21 F, Felix 6 M, Mary 2 F.

Thomas Jefferson Whatley and Nancy moved from Henry County, Alabama to
Wayne County, Mississippi between the 1850 census and the 1870 census as
they show up in Alabama in 1850 and Mississippi in 1870.

In their household there is a Mary K. Whatley listed at age 21. It is
believed this is the Mary C. who was in the household of James W. and
Sibbette Gissendaner Whatley in Henry County, Alabama in 1850. Thomas
and Nancy were next enumerated in Limestone County Texas in 1880 and Mary
Cathrine was enumerated as the wife of Captain John Bryant Jordan age 30
and the marriage records of Limestone County show that she came to Texas
from Mississippi. However, James Kimbell Gazzaway's mother William
Thomas (Miss Willie) Jordan Gazzaway shows in her Bible that Mary
Cathrine Whatley was born on June 7, 1849.

Miss Willie took James Kimbell to her "Grandpa and Grandma's" graves in
Faulkenberry Cemetery in Groesbeck, Texas in the 1930's. However, the
only Whatley's buried in Faulkenberry are Thomas J. and Nancy Whatley.
James W. Whatley died in Alabama in 1856 and there is no record of what
happened to Sibbette Gissendaner Whatley but she is believed to have
preceded James in death.

Mary C. listed as the daughter of James W. Whatley in this file is the
same person listed as Mary Cathrine Whatley the daughter of Thomas
Jefferson and Nancy Whatley.

Note from Randy Martin, 4/23/99 regarding 1860 census report, Wayne County, MS:
1860 Wayne Co., Mississippi census. He is on the very
end of the microfilm roll.

T. J. Whatley, 54, M, Farmer, 300, 2500, GA
Nancy , 51, F, GA
Michael , 22 M MS
Bitha , 14, F, MS

By this you can see that Mary Cathrine was not listed with T. J. and Nancy in 1860. Also, there is no proof that Mary Cathrine was the child listed with James Whatley in 1850. A female child named Mary age 2 was listed with James Whatley in 1850. Mary Cathrine would have been 1 year old in 1850. It
is possible and very likely that this is the same person but there is still no proof. I did not look at the microfilm for the 1850 Henry Co., AL census, but the US GENWEB census page list James Whatley's wife as Silvette. I will look at that film the next time I go to the library.
