ILLIAM LITTLE, SR.:
Notes for WILLIAM LITTLE (from Jane M. Lindsay, 1/99, updated 2002:

William LITTLE(2591) was born in 1660 in Massachusetts - not proved.(2592) While many researchers have claimed that William Little was transported from Massachusetts to Surry Co. VA, I have found no proof and am unaware of evidence that supports this conclusion. The jury is still out. He was living on 5 Jan 1709 in Surry Co. VA. William Little buys land in 1709 from Edmund Napier Jr. (or Edward Napkin); this land is left in 1740 to William Little and John Little. He died in 1740 in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co. Much data about William Little's family is from The Thigpen Tribe and unsubstantiated at this time. I have found several discrepancies in their information. They claim he was first married to Elizabeth Church and then to Martha Parnell. His will does not mention a wife by name.

According to The Thigpen Tribe, William was transported from Mass. to Surry Co. VA where in 1682 he purchased land from Edward Napkin. Actually Phillip Hunniford sold the land to Edward Napkin Sr. on 4 April 1682. His son, Edward Napkin, sold that land in 1709 to William Little.

However there is a William Little in Surry Co. by 1687, when he and Edward Napkin are convicted of not going to church. Even earlier, in 1673, a William Little is listed in those who took part in the Lawne's Creek Church uprising, the first tax strike. According to Elizabeth Wright, a William Little is found on the tax rolls as early as 1674. A John Little appears in 1688.

William Little was involved in the early colonial tax strike in Surry County, Virginia in 1674. Upon his death, he left his son, William Little II, his plantation and 200 acres upon which Wm. II lived. He also set his slaves free. (source: Michael C . Little, 2004).

The 1704 Quit Rent Roll lists no Little nor does the 1665 Tithables List.

Is it possible that this William and Lt. Isaac Little of England are brothers? Parents: Unknown father LITTLE.
He was married to Elizabeth CHURCH in 1680. (2594) NOT PROVED - As mentioned in other places, it is unlikely that the William Little who married Elizabeth Church is the same William Little who left a will in Surry Co. in 1740, even though that William was also married to an Elizabeth. Children were: Elizabeth LITTLE , Alice LITTLE, William LITTLE , John LITTLE, Katherine LITTLE , Benjamin LITTLE, Patience LITTLE, George LITTLE, Martha LITTLE, Abraham LITTLE.

He was married to Martha PARNELL in 1692. (2595) Children were: James LITTLE, Thomas LITTLE.

Dorothy Little's files also mention that: "it looks like William was mentioned in Josh Lavick's Will dated August 1727/8.

LIZABETH CHURCH:
Notes are from Jane Murtishaw Lindsay (2002 update):
Elizabeth CHURCH(565) was born about 1665. She died in 1691 in Surry Co. VA. The Thigpen Tribe lists two wives for William. It does not list any evidence for this marriage. Parents: Benjamin CHURCH and Alice SOUTHWORTH.
She was married to William LITTLE in 1680. (566) NOT PROVED - As mentioned in other places, it is unlikely that the William Little who married Elizabeth Church is the same William Little who left a will in Surry Co. in 1740, even though that William was also married to an Elizabeth. Children were: Elizabeth LITTLE , Alice LITTLE, William LITTLE , John LITTLE, Katherine LITTLE , Benjamin LITTLE, Patience LITTLE, George LITTLE, Martha LITTLE, Abraham LITTLE.

THE THIGPEN TRIBE by Alice Whitley Smith, published in NC is one of the references I have used to tie the Garys' to Richard Warren of the Mayflower. I quote from page 231.

LITTLE
William Little, b. 1660, d. 1740; m. 1st: 1680, Elizabeth Church, b. ca 1665, d. 1691, (dau of Alice Southworth and Benjamin Church, b. ca 1640, son of Richard Church, b. ca 1608, d. 12/27/1668; m. ca. 1636, Elizabeth Warren, d. 3/4/1670, daughter of Richard Warren and ---, his wife; said to be signer of the Mayflower Compact.)
Transported from Mass. to Surry Co. Va. where in 1682 he purchased land from Edward Napkin. [Their first child was born 1681]

It is interesting to note that Surry Co. VA is within 2 to 10 miles from Garysville, Prince George Co., VA (now Brandon, VA)

Notes for ALICE LITTLE (Jane Murtishaw Lindsay, 1/3/99)
Not named in William's will. Since he specifies his 2nd daughter and 3rd daughter, it is not likely that Elizabeth and Alice, who Thigpen lists as 1st and 2nd daughters, are both correctly placed and one or both may not be daughters of William at all.
