All census records state that Ezekiel, Zachariah and Samuel were born in South Carolina. Ezekiel in 1790, Zachariah about 1792, John II in 1802 and Samuel about 1805. John II's AL voter registration shows him born in Chester Co., SC. In the 1790 SC Head of Families census there were two STAGGS. William in the 96 District, Greenville County with one male over 16 years (William), 5 males under 16 and two females. Sam (Samuel?) in the 96 District, Spartanburg County with one male over 16 and two females. Either of these men could have been the father of these three STAGGS. If these men are brothers, then they were still living in SC in 1800 because John was born there in 1802 & Samuel was born about 1805. The 1800 SC census list four STAGGS, John and three Williams. John only had himself and one female. Only one of the Williams had males beside himself in his household. This William had 3 males under 10, 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 26 and 1 male over 45 (probably William), 3 females under 10, 1 female 10 to 16 and 1 female over 45 (probably Williams wife). This William seem to be the William in the 1790 census.

If (and it's a big if) This william is the father of Ezekiel born 1790, Zachariah born abt 1792 and Samuel born abt 1805, then there were three other brothers and four sisters. In the 1850 Sumner Co., TN census there is a James STAGGS, age 60 born in SC. In LA Co., TN there is a John STAGGS, age age 46, born in SC.

The family of John STAGGS II say his Father was the John STAGGS in the 1830 Jefferson Co., AL census, who was listed a few pages from Ezekiel and Zachariah.

The name Williamson STAGGS can be found on land records in Jefferson Co., AL, on Sept. 11, 1829 William DULANEY sold land to Williamson STAGGS. The only other time Williamson has been found is in the 1850 Wayne Co., TN census, living with Abraham STAGGS, 52 b. in GA., Williamson's age is shown as 85 and born in SC. This age is too young to be the William in the 1800 SC census, but other researchers show him born as early as 1756.

She was born Abt. 1790 in SC, and died 1851 in Pontotoc Co., Miss.

Ezekiel Staggs lived a long and interesting life. There have been more records found on Ezekiel than any of his descendants. Luckily, at that time, there was only one Staggs with his first name. Ezekiel moved around a lot and in those days it was not as easy to travel as it is now. He was first found in Franklin Co. TN in 1812. Next, in Jefferson Co., AL in 1823. By 1840 He was in Yalobusha Co. MS. In 1850 he was in Pontotoc Co. MS. Probably by 1855 he had left MS and in 1860, he shows up in Sevier Co. AR, which is right on the Oklahoma border (then Indian Territory). In 1870 he was living in Mt. Ida, Montgomery Co., AR, which is a little west of Hot Springs AR where he died.

8/5/1892, Montgomery Co., AR----Sarah G. Staggs applied for a widow's pension for War of 1812. In her claim Sarah states that Ezekiel was born in 1790 in S.C., was a Blacksmith, 6 feet tall, black hair, blue eyed, and dark. Her first husband was Levi Buttram who died in 1845. Ezekiel's wife, Elizabeth (Childress?) died in S.C. in 1850. The application was denied due to inadequate records. (Note, did Elizabeth die? The 1860 Carroll Co., AR census list an Elizabeth Staggs, age 64, born in S.C. living with a Gilliam family.)

1911, Arkansas Census of Confederate Veterans, John Milton Staggs was the son of William Staggs of New Albany, Pontotoc Co., Miss., who was the son of Ezekiel Staggs and his wife Elizabeth, also of New Albany MS. His mother was Carolina Youngblood of Jefferson Co., AL.

It has not been proved that Zachariah was a brother of Ezekiel and Samuel, but they were in the sames places at the same time. Zachariah was married in Franklin Co., TN in 1816 and Ezekiel was on the Tax rolls there in 1812. Ezekiel, Zachariah and Samuel were all in Jefferson Co., AL, Ezekiel by 1823, Zachariah and Samuel by 1825. On Sept. 20, 1825, Zachariah consented to Samuel's marrage to Catharine Speer. Samuel was too old to be a son of Zachariah, but must have been a relative, probable a brother. On Sept. 20, 1839, Ezekiel and Zachariah bought land in Jefferson Co. near each other. Also buying land on that date and in the same area was Benjamin Staggs and James M. Staggs. Their relationship to Ezekiel and Zachariah is unknown. In 1840, Zachariah was in Sumter Co., AL, Ezekiel was in Yalobusha Co., MS and Samuel was in Walker Co., AL. By 1850 Zachariah was in Hot Springs Co., AR, Samuel was in Dallas Co., AR and Ezekiel was in Pontotoc Co., MS. Ezekiel was in AR by 1857

I have only found this Obadiah one time and that was in the Pontotoc Co. 1845 census. It list two Obadiahs. The one with no children would be the younger Obadiah.

The 1850 Pontotoc Co., MS census shows children living with Ezekiel & Elizabeth STAGGS that were too young to be Elizabeths children. I have shown then as the children of William & Caroline STAGGS. It looks as though William had died and Caroline & Eliza were living with her brother Samuel and the other children were living with Ezekiel.

1857, Jefferson Co., AL. The will of Andrew W. Youngblood list a daughter named Polly C. Youngblood, who married William Staggs. One of Andrew's sons was Samuel W. Youngblood.

1862 & 1863, Eli listed as a Sergeant in Company I, 32nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment CSA. This Regiment was in several Skirmishes, Actions & Engagements and the Battle of Prairie Grove, near Fayetteville AR. Surrendered in Galveston TX on June 2, 1865. Few records survived the war so it is not known how long Eli served with this Regiment. John Milton Staggs was also a member of this Regiment.

8/8/1883, Woodruff Co., AR, Robert and Minnie Staggs petition the Court to appoint M. A. Coates their guardian, with E. Crossett and B. L. Berry his deputes.

The story of what happened to Eli, Mary and Nancy J. Staggs comes from the family of Florence Arminda (Minnie) Staggs. Mary Berry Staggs died shortly after George was born in 1860. The Children probably lived with the Berry family while Eli was gone to war. When he returned, Eli married Nancy Jane Berry. Mary and Nancy were the daughters of Jarrett Berry and the sisters of Burton L. Berry. The twins, Robert and Minnie, were born March 10, 1866. At the birth or a short time later, Eli went to get a doctor and was shot and killed by a Union trooper. Between 1866 and 1870, Nancy Berry Staggs married William Gilleon. Nancy died sometime before 1880.

Another Staggs married into the Berry family. There is a marriage record in Pontotoc Co., MS. For John M. Staggs to Lirena Berry, another daughter of Jarrett Berry. The 1860 Jackson Co., AR Census shows John and Lany Staggs with 4-year-old daughter Mittie living next door to Jarrett Berry. In 1865 John Milton Staggs, the son of William Staggs, married Mary Rogers. In 1880, John and Mary Staggs and children are in the Woodruff Co. Census. It looks like another Berry daughter died young.

In the 1830 AL census there were three STAGGS families, Ezekiel, John and Zachariah. John had no children under 5 years old, one each 5 to 10. Ezekiel had 2 males under 5, 3 males 5 to 10 and Zachariah had 3 males under 5 and 2 males 5 to 10. Samuel was not in the 1830 AL census, but there is a Samuel in Wayne Co TN in 1830 that could be him and his sons Thomas and John W. sometimes show born in TN. This Samuel had 2 males under 5 and 1 male 5 to 10. If this is the same Samuel, he had three sons born before Thomas & John W. In the 1850 Pontotoc Co., MS census Ezekiel has two males named Ezekiel, at least one was a grandson. Zachariah, in the 1850 Hot Springs Co., AR census had a son, age 18, named Ezekiel E.

Notes for George Birten Staggs:

George B. Staggs is my ancestor and he has been very hard to trace. A family tree given to me shows his middle name as Birten, but this may be a misprint. It was probably Burton, named after his mother's brother, Burton L. Berry. Cemetery records of his children list his wife as Anna Josephine Thompson. There was an Anna Josephine Thompson living near George in Woodruff Co. in 1860 and 1870, but there is a record showing her marriage to a Miller. (since writing this, I found a marriage record in Woodruff Co. for Annie J. Thompson, age 18, to R. H. Nesbitt, age 24. Recorded 5/15/1875) In 1880, George was in the Perry Co., Ark. Census in the household of Amanda Welch. In the next household was Anna Nesbith and her 6 month old daughter, Hearriet (spelling on some census' is worse than mine) in the household of Mary Edmonds and listed as Mary's sister. Amanda Welch was a sister of Anna and Mary and they had all lived close together in Woodruff Co. On Jan. 29, 1882, Conway Co., Ark. shows the marriage of George Staggs to Annie Nesbeth. Two of George's children show their place of birth as Oppello Ark., which is in Conway Co. just north of Perry Co. Family history says that George died in 1897 and Anna died in 1899 or 1900. George and two of their sons are probably buried in Wolf cemetery west of Oppelo. It is unknown where Anna is buried. A family story said that after the death of George, Anna and the children went to live with Dexter Welsh, who was the son of her sister Amanda. All the children were in Pope Co., Ark. in 1910. Lewis, Walter and Robert were living with John and Mildred Staggs Hottinger. Charles was living with the family of Rue E. Bonds, who raised him.

Mildred Staggs Hottinger, oldest child of George & Anna, passed down some of George's papers. Among the papers were; Tax receipts from 1884 to 1897, One from Perry Co., the rest from Conway Co. Mortgage and loan papers with some paid receipts. There are two Warranty Deed that show George and Anna owned land that had been owned by Amanda Welch. Two letters written to Anna from her sister Mary Jane Edmonds about land that Mary still owned in either Conway or Perry Co. One letter to George from his Uncle, James M. Berry. Three, rather desperate, letters to George and Anna from Dollie Spriggs. Dollie did not seem to get along with her father and wanted to come live with her Uncle George. The last letter from Dollie was dated Nov. 1896. There was an account book, dated from 1889 to 1897, that looks as though they ran some kind of store. It listed goods bought and amounts owed, also the number of days different men had work for George. It looks as thought George and Anna were fairly prosperous for those days.

LDS files show Anna Thompson married a Miller. I have seen that record and believe it is a different Anna Thompson. I have a copy of the Woodruff Co. marr. recorded June 23. 1875 of R. H. Nesbitt to Annie J. Thompson. The Perry Co., AR 1880 Census shows Annie NESBETT, sister, and Harriet NESBITT, niece, in the household of Mary Edmonds. I have letters to Annie from M. J. Edmonds that start, Dear Sister. I believe her name was Mary Jane after her mother, Mary Jane Forehand. In the Perry Co., AR 1880 census, the household just before Mary Edmonds was Amanda Welch, the widow of James F. Welch. Amanda's Great-grandaughter showed me a song book that had belonged to Amanda and it was signed, Anna Amanda Thompson Welch. Also living in Amanda's house was George Staggs. George and Annie were marr. 1/29/1882 in Conway Co., AR.

In the 1910 Hot Springs census, Lillie is still living with her grandfather. There is a J. W. STAGGS & wife Emma, with daughters Linnie, age 20 and Lois, age 15 in the same census. This is probably James with a new wife.
