INDEX
Notes
In 1643, at the age of 14, her father sent Rose Stoughton with a distant cousin, Capt. Israel
Stoughton, to New England for safekeeping during the English Civil War, according to her brother's
autobiography (MS. Addtional 1674, British Museum). Her father died the following January. It
might seem unlikely that the sister of a Baronet should have married a blacksmith in New England,
but at the time she went to America her uncle Nicholas Stoughton was Lord of the Manors of
Stoughton and Stoke, and her cousin of the same name was expected to inherit the properties. Rose
married Richard Otis about 1648 and her brother was not expected to inherit the family estates until
he did so on the expected death of Rose Onslow. It was not until 1660 that her brother became a
Baronet. In his autobiography he says that his sister Rose "was now living there [America] the wife
of ----- Otis, with several children." The Stoughton family in New England was also distinguished.
Her cousin William Stoughton (son of Capt. Israel) was Lt. Governor of Massachusetts.
