My name is Richard Allen St. Clair. I was born in Portland, Maine to Eugene St. Clair and Anita LaBelle St. Clair. Both were born in Maine. I understand that my St. Clair ancestors may have been Sinclair's from London, England. My mother's ancestors were probably from Canada. Our great grandfather, Eugene, was born in England. His date of birth was approximately January 6, 1856. He died April 21, 1939, at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 15 days. He was the son of Charles and Louise St. Clair. He had at least one sister named Louise. He died at Sailors Snug Harbor, in New York City. He may have been born in Liverpool, England. That is where his family was living at the time he came to this country. His father was a Brick mason, and he did not want to go into that business; so he was a baker for a while until he was 15 years old when he came to North America. He was a purser on a ship that sank in bad weather on its run between Boston and Portland. He was lucky, however. He had been ill and was unable to be on the ship on that day. His wife's name was Alice Allen. That is where my middle name comes from. She was from Hallowell, Maine. She may have been born on April 7, 1860. She was the daughter of Eben and Harriet (Gray) Allen of Hallowell. Her brothers and sisters were Augusta, Eben P., Harriet Anna, George R., Mary, and Nikki. Their children were Morris, Thomas, Roy, Louise, Rosalie (aka Lillian and William). My grandfather was William, a Portland fireman. His wife was Ethel, daughter of Charles and Sarah (Kelly) Forshay. Their children were Charles, Marion, William, Eugene (my father), Esborn, Alice, Sadie, and Ethel. If anyone has further information, I would greatly appreciate it. I am married to Marie Bernadette Leal. Her relatives are related to the founders of San Antonio, Texas, as well as to the founders of Laredo, Texas. One of her grandfathers was born in Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spain. His last name is also Vizcaya.
