In World War I, he was a deep sea diver. For many years he was a salesman. When the depression hit, he sold and repaired Cotton Gins for Hardwick-Etter until he retired. He traveled much in the south and southwest. "He could make a cotton gin pur". Built a home at 809 E. Jones. Paid builder who did not pay the lumbar yard for materials, so lost home in 1935 - moved to pecan Street house which is now part of Hardwicke-Etter Company (Now continental). Moved to West Houston Street for less than a year. House had a basement one of few in Sherman. Moved to 512 Walnut till 1950. Moved to 1310 N. Harrison till deaths. He was in the Navy when they married. Hubert trained as a Deep Sea Diver. He was sent to France but Armistice was signed for WWI before ship got to France so they turned ship around and back to states. He always said he crossed the Atlantic, but never got anyplace. His picture is in the book "Up for Air" by Master Diver Frank Meier (E.P. Dutton & Co. Inc. 1940) between pages 64 & 65. Was a salesman for Decker, did crepe paper window displays, painted signs during depression. Helped unload box cars of beans. Got to keep beans from broken bags. Guys "accidentally" dropped bags. Swept up beans, brought home for family and friends. Went to work at Hardwicke & Etter in 1940's. Became Cotton Gin Erector. Built new and rebuilt old cotton gins from Tennessee to Arizona. During War H&E made morter shells. He was a foreman on the assembly line. Had 100 women on the line - said at any given time 50 were hot and 50 cold. After war, went back to erector job. Was in a wreck sometime after February 1950, He was coming home from a job in mississippi and went to sleep and drove off the road. 1920 Census, Sherman Texas, Grayson County lists him as Truck Driver for mill. |
