1.  PHERIBA1 COATS was born Abt. 1800 in Marion, SC, and died Aft. 1861.  She married (1) UNKNOWN COATS. 

 

Notes for PHERIBA COATS:

I have found Pheriba’s name spelled at least four different ways.  They include: Pheriba, Phebe, Pheby, and Pheriby.  The 1840 census has Phebe as head of the household with one male child under 5 years old, one male between 5-10,one male child between 15-20, three females between 5-10, one female between 10-15, one female between 20-30, and one female between 40-50.  Pheriba’s husband (father of John Jasper Coats) died around 1830.  I have not been able to identify him.  Maybe the DNA test will help.

Phebe Coats was listed a member of Catfish Creek Baptist Church in 1861.   Also listed are Mary Coats, Sarah Coats, Martha Coats, and Julia Ann Coats (age 16) who married John Jasper Coats.  The church is in Latta, in Dillon County, SC.

2.  JOHN JASPER2 COATS (PHERIBA1) was born 19 Dec 1829 in Dillon, SC, and died 04 Aug 1902 in Methodist Rehobeth Church Cemetery, intersection of Hwy 23 and 309, north of Cool Spring..  He married (1) SUSANAH CALDER Bef. 1855, daughter of ANNIAS CALDER and ELIZABETH.  She was born 1833 in Marion, SC, and died Bef. Oct 1862.  He married (2) JULIA ANN COOK Oct 1862 in Dillon, SC, daughter of MOSES COOK and SARAH COOK.  She was born 02 Nov 1844 in Dillon, SC, and died 28 Apr 1932 and is buried in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Dillon County, SC.

 

Notes for JOHN JASPER COATS:

One record said he was from Gum Swamp.

 

John was a private in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, S.C. Vol., Company H.

He was discharged in Petersburg, VA in April 1865.  Source: South Carolina Civil War Pension records.  Enlisted on Sept. 28, 1861 in Marion by Captain Durham.

Background: John Coats enlisted in the Confederate army on September 28, 1861 as a private.  On December 14, 1862, a number solders, including John Coats, was captured in the battle of Kinston, NC.  He was released on December 31, 1862.  In September of 1864, he was arrested for desertion as he tried to return home to his family.  On September 24, 1864, a Court Martial was held for John Coats and he was found guilty of desertion and sentenced to death.  On November 1, 1864, he was release after the following letter was received.  Six months later the Civil War ended.

We the undersigned citizens of Marion District, understanding that John Coats Of Company H, 23 Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers is under sentence of death for desertion in Petersburg, VA, write a letter to mitigate the death penalty and of recommending the said John Coats to executive clemency, state that we have long known the said John Coats and cheerfully bear testimony to his good Character.  He is an honest, but poor man, with a wife and four or five little children extremely poor and dependent on said Coats.  Coats is at the same time a very ignorant uninformed man and we are satisfied that his desertion or better his absenteeism from the army, (for we can not think that though he maybe technically guilty of desertion his crime can't be classed with those deserters who absolutely persist in refusing to fight) was caused by an ardent desire to see his family. We do not think he is one that would deserted and betrayed his country. -- This much is to be sure of Coats that in the beginning of the war he volunteered in the company to which he now belongs. -- The undersigned think the case of Coats is very well deserving of executive clemency and thus so recommend him.

In 1861, Susan Coats was listed as a member of Catfish Creek Baptist Church in Latta, SC.  Also listed were their children and a Julia A. Cook.  Mosses Cook (Julia's father) was also a member.  I have not found the date or cause of death for Susan.  She gave birth to Phoebe Jane Coats on May 19, 1862 and John Coats married Julian Cook in Oct. 1862.  It could be that she died in or as a result of child birth.

PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY Dillon SC

Located on the Mullins Hwy (57). Coming from Mullins it is on the left, just before you get to Green lawn Cemetery. Her grave is close to the road at the far end (away from the church) of the cemetery.  She is buried next her son Eddie McCoy Coats and his wife Agnes.  The name on the grave is Julian Coats.

In the 1920 Census, Julian Coates is living with Eddie and Agnes Coates (her son).  Julian is buried next to Eddie and Agnes in Pleasant Grove Cemetery just outside of Dillon.  Eddie put a large marble head stone on Julian's grave.

Obituary of Phoebe Jane Coates Surles

 

The Dillon Herald, Dillon, South Carolina

October 18, 1934, Vol. 39, No. 51

 

Mrs. W. P. Surles Dies at Florence

 

   Mrs. W. P, Surles, widow of the late W. P. Surles,

died Sunday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.

L. Ammons, in Florence.  Mrs. Surles was born and

reared in Dillon county, and with Mr. Surles moved to

Dillon from their farm on Buck Swamp about 20 years

ago where she resided until she went to Florence to

make her home with her daughter.

 

   The following account of Mrs. Surles' death is

taken from the Morning News of Florence:

 

   "Mrs. W. P. Surles, 71, died last night at 8:30

o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. L.

Ammons, 414 South Graham street with whom she had been

making her home for some time.  She had been in

failing health for the past six years.  She was well

known and had large numbers of admiring friends here

who will regret to learn of her death.

 

   "The funeral services will be held at the Ammons

home this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock and will be

conducted by Dr. W. R. Alexander, pastor of the First

Baptist church of which she was a loyal and devoted

member.  The body will be laid to rest in Mt. Hope

cemetery.

 

   "Mrs. Surles is survived by the following sons and

daughters: Mrs. H. H. Driggers of Clio; Mrs. J. L.

Ammons and Mrs. George W. Thorne of Florence; the Rev.

H. F. Surles of Winnsboro, A. T. Surles of Danville,

Va., J. M. Surles of Red Springs, N. C., J. A. Surles

of Columbia.  Sixteen grand children also are left.

 

   "Before marriage Mrs. Surles was Miss Phoebe Jane

Coates of Dillon.  She was a woman of great courage

and character and of such a lovable personality that

she attracted friends wherever she went.  She had an

abiding faith in her church and Bible and her religion

went deep.

 

   "Mrs. Surles was the sort of woman that everybody

loved and she will be missed in the circle in which

she moved."

Mrs. Ella Jane Coates Barnhill, widow of the late Charles Whiteford Barnhill of 434 Meeting St., Charleston and formerly of Horry County died June 23, 1959. Mrs. Barnhill was born in Marion County on Dec. 3, 1893, a daughter of the late John and Julia Ann Cook Coates. For the past 24 years she had made her home with her daughter an son-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. Charlie Tyler, living in Charleston for the past 5 years.
