Detlef's daughter Emma Stehbens m Frederick Strand
Emma was the 6th daughter/10th child of Detlef & Anna Staeben/Stehbens. She was born 24 April 1860 in Wöhrden, Schleswig-Holstein and as a 5 year-old she migrated with her parents and living siblings on the "Sophie" to Maryborough, Queensland. Her first husband, Jean Jules, died tragically leaving her with an infant son. As a young widow, she married Frederick Strand. Together they had 9 living children. The youngest of their children, Mary Ann, is pictured in this image. Emma has pinned on her dress the badge of the Australian Infantry Forces. It is the badge of her son, Henry Alfred Strand, who was killed in action in France. The death of her first husband, her son's death in France, and her first son's death fom burns as a fireman, all indicate that the thread of tragedy ran through her life. She is known to have had to deal with 5 stillbirths or neo-natal deaths of infants she bore, as well. And her own death was preceded by suffering. Emma has over 350 descendants recorded on the Stehbens Family Tree. Descendant surnames include MCGEE, SAINT, O'NEILL, HYDE, JONES, CHAPMAN, MERGARD, TOMS, DANIEL, PLATZ, MARKS, ALLDRIDGE and others.
