Stehbens picnic in the Dandenongs, 1920s
The South Australian sub-clan of Stehbens is descended from Detlef & his first wife Catharine Clasen, through their son, Jacob Heinrich Stäben. Jacob and his wife Johanna migrated from Wöhrden, Holstein to Maryborough, Queensland in 1865, together with Jacob's father, step-mother, his surviving siblings as well as with Jaob & Johanna's 2 infant children. Jacob went in search of gold, first in Queensland, then to the Top End (Pine Creek) but settled at Edithburgh, South Australia. This photo taken the day after Melbourne Cup Day public holiday shows a gathering of their descendants with some friends. In the back row is Dick Deggerman, "Snowy ...", Frederick Stehbens, Thomas Hunt, Leslie Hunt & Wesley Parslow. The 3 adult women are Enid Vera (Stehbens) Parslow, Amelia (Edwards) Stehbens, and Annie Elizabeth (Stehbens) Hunt. The 2 little girls are Leila and Doris Stehbens, the daughters of Amelia and John Jacob Stehbens. John was the photographer. John Jacob, Annie Elizabeth and Enid Vera were 3 of the children of Claus Detlef Stehbens, the infant son of Jacob and Johanna who migrated with them from Germany on the "Sophie" in 1865.
