Today, behind the School in the Village of Besitz, Mecklenburg-Pommern, Germany is the home of Thomas Stebens (centre). Herr Stebens lives in a thatched roofed house that dates back to earlier centuries. To enter it is to journey back into ancestral history, for this home is one of the original farmers' homes (Büdnerhaus) that still dominate the townscape. About 25 of the almost 100 dwellings in Besitz, today, are the original three-storied dwellings of the eighteenth and ninteenth century residents of the village. Thomas' sister, Beate Stebens, who is married to Maik Meier, also lives in a thatch-roofed home, in Lindenstrasse, Blücher. [Photo supplied by Dr Detlef Timm, Mayor of Bezitz.] This home of Mr Thomas Stebens is easily located on the map of Besitz for it is the most southerly home in the village.
