Walter Henrich Nielsen, a "Leading Aircraftman" was killed when the Lockheed, in which he was flying on a survey flight, disappeared on a flight from Lowood to Bowen, Queensland. It is assumed that the plane came down in the Coral Sea. It disappeared without trace. A portrait of Walter, the Lookheed and the final page from the aircraft's log are pictured. This aircraft operated mostly from Townsville from its test flight in January 1942 until it disappeared on 23 July 1945. Once before this plane had crash landed coming to rest on its nose, July 1943. Walter was the 2nd son of George & Myrtle (nee Lister) Nielsen. He was 19 when he died having enlisted 16 months earlier.
