In 1884, Nicolaus Hinrich Stehben left Germany to migrate to USA. He sailed on the "Salier" from Bremen to New York. Enroute the vessel berthed at Southampton, England. Nicolaus was just 17 years old when he migrated. He settled in Clinton, Iowa and married Emma Winkler. He was the son of Franz & Johanna Sophia Maria (Lange) Staeben. The "Salier" had 2 masts as well as one funnel. It was a pioneer of the Germany to Australia mail route. Built in 1875 in Hull, England at Earle's Shipyard it was operated by Lloyd North German line. The vessel came to a tragic end with great loss of life in the Bay of Biscay.
