Emigrants embarking in Hamburg: 1850
The City of Hamburg has an excellent website which focuses on the mass migrations through that port. While all of the attention is given to migrations to the USA, with no reference to Australian migration, it does present good images such as this one, and identifies reasons for migration at the time. There is a portrait of Adolf Godeffroy who owned a fleet of vessels including the "Sophie". We know that the first of the family to go to USA c1852 was pro-democracy, and that the Stäben/Stehbens family who migrated to Australia in 1865 had similar political leanings. They regarded themselves as oppressed, prefering to think of themselves as Schleswig-Holsteiners rather than German. They were on the side of the Danes and then the democracy movement. But their dominant reason for migrating was to hope that there was a better future for their children in a New World. And this they clearly realized.
