1st Stehbens Land in Australia: the KEPNOCK BLOCK
The Original Stehbens Land Selection in Australia is located between Kepnock Rd and Greathead Rd, Bundaberg, Queensland. Claus Johann Stehbens, who preferred to be called John Stehbens, was the first German to select and develop a successful farm "on the Burnett". He and his wife and extended family began living on this 32Ha (80 acres) Woongarra scrub block in July 1871. John and Otillie and his father, Detlef and their combined family lived here for the required 5 years before he was given freehold title. He and his wife, Ottilie, worked hard and raised their family there. His widowed father, Detlef, who was the key bricklayer for the brick-lined well, assisted him. This montage of photos taken in 1991 and 1994 depicts key aspects of the site that allow us to pinpoint the original Stehbens homesite, their well and their movement. See below, on this website, Related File: “Original Stehbens Land Selection in Australia” for a fuller explanation and description of these photos.
