Ken & Lorna Williamson travel the Silk Road 2007
Author Ken Williamson and his wife Lorna travelled the Great Silk Road from Istanbul to the Forbidden City in Beijing during June 2007. During their journey Lorna wrote, "We are now in Sinope on the Black Sea coast of Turkey on our great adventure. We had a great drive today over the mountains from Safronbolu whıch was just amazing. We spent the night in an hotel that was over 400 years old and built of wooden struts wıth stone in between. We had a great walk around the little town and a lovely lunch in a lady's kitchen. She made us very much at home. We then went for a stroll past the blacksmıths shop and he called us over to have a chat. We ended up in his little back room going through his photos and awards for blacksmithing. We enjoyed our chat so I gave him a little koala pin and he then insisted on giving me a full massage. I must say his hands were on the heavy sıde. We have laughed about my having a massage by the blacksmith ever since and I won't forget it either." Ken writes, "The drive along the Black Sea coast through all the farming land has been beautiful. We are really looking forward to crossing ınto the mountains of Georgia and then continuıng into Azerjiban. There have been some fantastic sedımentary rock layers. This whole area was once the Tethys Sea and there is limestone everywhere." Ken continues, "This keyboard seems to be English, although it also has the Georgian script. The shift key is sticky. On the last days in Turkey we visited the Sumela monastery (pictured) which is somehow stuck way up on the side of a mountain inland from Trabzon. We also went inland where we thrilled to the sight of snow-covered mountains and rushing streams. We said goodbye to our Turkish guide at the border. We then walked into Georgia. They returned with amazing photographs. [LINEAGE: Ken s/o Catherine Stehbens d/o Robert s/o Claus s/o Detlef s/o Frantz H Stebens]
