Regarding his art work War Stencils 2006, Simon Stehbens says, "I researched a social situation that was relevant to me: war. The war in Iraq was the focus of the media at the time and through this media coverage I noticed the limited coverage of behind the scenes. The media largely focused on the base level of war - the fighting, the casualties - where, when, who, what. My artwork looks behind the scenes - before, during and after. The selection of images tells the story about causes and effects. The texture of the background is corrosive as war is corrosive." Simon's artwork was recognized and selected for exhibition throughout Queensland, and exhibited in the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane in 2007. His medium was enamel paint applied to recycled refrigerator metal. [LINEAGE: Simon s/o Michael s/o Frank Stehbens s/o George Stebens s/o Wilhelm Stäben s/o Detlef Staeben s/o Frantz Stebens]
