Col Ashbel Smith, commanding the defenses of Galveston reported that the 35th Dismounted Tx Cav as part of his command with a total 232 men and officers. The 35th was dispatched to Galveston because of unrest by the garrison of coastal artillery troops stationed there. Citizens of the island had been complaining to the military authorities about the troops stealing food and clothes since they were so poorly supplied.
