Grandma Bailey DePriest - Emma and John Stepp (120 KB)
I have waited on this several months, long enough for some confirmation of what I believe. I believe this to be a picture of Emma and John Stepp, though I can find no one to definitly say so.I found it in the photographs of my parents several years after they had died. It is definitly not from one of the other sides of my family, it can only be from the Steppe side. I think when Emma died that those around at the time took souvenirs. Uncle Daniel had the only know photo to Cleveland Steppe. Joy Steppe now has a couple of vases that belonged to Emma. So maybe my father took this photo. On the left is the full old tintype, the emulsion has dried and cracked with age and turned brownish, the corners are missing. Tintypes were current around 1875. On the right is an enlargement of the faces. The mans face has long pointed ears like those of Cleveland Steppe. And there are other similarities to other children of John D, like the thin short nose, about 1/4 the length of the face. The womans face has a wide, long, crooked nose about 1/3 the length of the face, like that of Frank Steppe and other children and grandchildren. Her hair is put up like that of known Emma photos years later. Thus the "Steppe Nose" came from Emma Layne and not John Stepp.Until someone can show that this is not John and Emma, or until we find a photo known to be of John D, I am believing this photo to be of John Dabney Stepp and Emma. - John&Wife (74 KB)

In 1930 Cleveland and his 17 year old son Lewis were working on a bridge nearMemphis TN. On July 16, he fell from the bridge. Son Lewis watched him fallall the way down to his death on the works below. I have most of two sets ofbridge pictures. One set is of pier construction and the other of roadbedconstruction. The onlybridge picture found in Kate Steppe's things aftershe died was this picture from the pier construction set, I guess Clevelandsent it to her in Staunton. I have to think that he is one of the men in thepicture, there would be no other reason for her to have it. - Zach & John (190 KB)
Zach&John2-MB: This old tintype shows a couple of clowns; pretending to be outlaws. John P. Bailey is seated with cigar chomping brother Zach standing behind. The camera brought out the actor in all of us even 125 years ago! - Roadbed (26 KB)
Evidentaly Cleveland sent some of the bridge pictures home, to GrandmaDePriest, since there are notes on the back of a couple of the roadbedconstuction set. Kate&Pete is of Kate Steppe, husband Pete Francisco, and son Winston. - Bens Phota (129 KB)
Ben Bailey of Larned Kansas is a third cousin of W. C. Steppe. He paid to have much of the research done that I sent to you on the Bailey family. Eventually Justin will add the Bailey side to his family tree? Ben had an old picture that his grandfather passed on, he knows that one person in the picture is his great-grandfather Jesse H. Bailey Jr, a cousin of John Pleasant Bailey, my and Dan's great-grandfather. The other men were never identified so Ben has been showing the picture to relatives here in Virginia when he comes and has had if published in the Brookneal newspaper to ask for help.A National Park Service person specializing in old clothing has placed the time of the picture at 1885. Ben works for NPS. The standing man on the left end is Jesse H. Bailey Jr. In 1885 he was 24 years old and the standing left man in the picture looks close to that age. If we assume that the men are relatives then the two older standing men on the right would have to be uncles. Now all of the Bailey uncles died in the war except German S. Bailey who was 66 years old in 1885. Niether standing older man on the right is that old. So they would have to be Bailey uncles in through the wife of Jesse Bailey Sr who was Mary Hudson, or maybe descendants on the Daniel side of the family. The man standing on the left and the one seated on the left and maybe others have the Bailey head; shaped like a hexagon with big ears at two vertices. Look at pictures of my father and other Bailey ancestors. And another point to consider is the placement of hands on shoulders which would seem to say "this is my son" or "this is my brother"Anyway, the picture is interesting to look at and think about. Comparing it with the Bailey chart that I sent to you makes us wish that Jesse H Bailey Jr had let someone know who the men were! - Tucker Steppe (100 KB)
