Notes for L
AWRENCE SOUTHWICK:
"PASSENGER AND IMMIGRATION LISTS INDEX" SHOW THAT A LAWRENCE SOUTHWICK AND A JOHN SOUTHWICK IMMIGRATED TO SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS SOMETIME AROUND 1636 with their first four children. they had two children later in Salem.

In 1639 there were two acres of land granted to Lawrence Southwick alongwith a share of several adjoining acres for use by the two neighboring "glass workers" . This was in the neighborhood of Strong Water Brook and Aborn St. (in 1881known as Salem and Peabody. (Felt's Annals of Salem).

In 1653 Lawrence Southwick was overseer of William Bacon's will (town records page 235)

In 1657 Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick, an aged and grave couple, inhabitants of Salem, Mass., and members of First Church, who for entertaining two strangers (John Copeland and Christopher Holder) were committed to prison at Boston. Lawrence was released as being a member of First Church, to be dealt with by that congregation; but Cassandra was kept in prison seven weeks and the fined forty shillings for owning a paper written by the two strangers which spoke of the truth and the Sciptures. Governor Endicott put questions to her to ensnare her and bring her under the law, which was illegal, said law being enacted to punish any person who should write or hold any heretical papers, said papers were not proved to be heretical but were the truth.

May 16, 1659, Old Style, Lawrence, Cassandra, and their son Josiah were inprisoned at Boston for being Quakers, and were kept there for twenty weeks on a charge of violating a law which was enacted while they were in prison.

April 8, 1659 Lawrence Southwick of Salem bought of Edward Lummus, of Ipswich, 3 acres of land (Salem Records).

SAVAGE ON LAWRENCE SOUTHWICK:
"Salem, 1639, with wife Cassandra join the church and was admitted a freeman Sept. 6, 1639. On December 6, 1639 had his children John, Josiah, Daniel, and Provided baptized at once. The other children were Mary, wife of Henry Trask, and Deborah. He was probably a glass blower. In the dark days of discrimination against the Quakers, 1658 and 1669, the whole family suffered much fines and imprisonment and the daughter Clarissa was subject to great severity. When the fines of Daniel and Provided were unpaid, the tender-hearted General Court, with intent to magnify the glory of God, ordered the to be sold for slave to any Christians in Virginia or Barbados. We are permitted to rejoice , that the sentence was not enforce and the father with his flock found refuge at Shelter Island near the east end of Long Island where in peace he made his will of July 10, 1659, allow, in 1660; James the ch. Daniel, John, Josiah, and daughters Mary and Debprah; and his wife and himself died within three days of each other, it is said. See Felt, II. 580-2, and Col. Rec. IV. part first, pp. 349, 366,7, and 410. Much as they might love their native land the danger from their opinions required banishment it seemed with a proviso, that they should suffer death for return". SAVAGE, VOL 4 DICT FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND pg 91.

died in 1660 on Shelter Island, New York; while seeking refuge from their persecution as Quakers at about age 60.

Neal S. Southwick found papers which convinced him that Cassandra was originally of the Burrell family. Fred Hammond clearly believes his reading of Rebecca Potter's will proves she was Potter, "rebecca mentions sister (Thomasine) Buffum, sister (Cassandra) Southwick and sister Boyce". thomasine was the wife of Robert Buffum. their grandson, Jonathan, married Sam and Provided's granddaughter, Mary Gaskill.
