Notes for JAMES STEVENS:
"The Lovingston area was settled by Huguenots after they were forced from France in 1685 by the Edict of Nantes. Lovingston became the county seat shortly after Nelson County was formed between 1807-1808 from Amherst County. The courthouse was built about this same time (1807-1809) on land donated by James Loving. Hence the name of the village. The Loving family is closely associated with both the Seay and Fortune families.
"James Stevens, his wife Behethland Taliaferro, and their friends the Lovings, were established citizens in Caroline County. In 1762, before the Revolution, the King of England granted to James Stevens and John Loving a large tract of land in what was then Amherst County, now Nelson..."The story, which has been handed down in the family, goes that when the two friends reached a high point of land " they viewed the landscape o'ver" and agreed that one would take the land as far as he could see on the right side of the road, and the other the left. Most of the Stevens lands lie to the west of the old stage coach road. The Lovings settled on their side and the name Lovingston was given to the county seat."
* Excerpted from "A Stevens Family of Nelson County, VA" by Dorothy B. Giles.
Also from Joyce Turel is a quote from the work by Blanche Stevens Hamner, "...Stevens Family of Nelson Co...." which has an almost identical quote.
His will is in the Nelson Co., Va. Will Book A, p. 294 ff...Mary Stewart sent it to Joyce Turel, and in July 2004, Joyce kindly gave it to a couple of us:
"I, James Stevens do make the following Codicil to my will which is to all intents and purposes to be received and taken as part thereof,
Viz., It is my will and desire that in addition to the property left my beloved wife Behetheland Stevens, she shall have one hundred acres
more of the tract of land devised to my son John G. Stevens to adjoin the land left my said wife by my will, also the following Negro Slaves,to wit, little Jude, Sue, Davy and Jim, also all my stock of every kind and household and kitchen furniture which said land and other property her with the property devised to her by my will, I wish my said wife to hold and enjoy for and during her natural life.
"After the death of my said wife Behetheland Stevens I give and bequeath the said Negro Sue to my Grandson James Stevens son of John G. Stevens and the said Negro Davy to my Grandson Samuel Stevens son of James Stevens Junr and the said Negroes little Jude and Jim to my Grand daughters Sally and Behetheland Penn children of my Daughter Behetheland Penn Dec'd [emphasis added] to them and their respective heirs forever; The Negro Tom devised to my daughter Elizabeth Thompson, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife during her natural life and after her death to be disposed of as the other property left my said wife.
"I give and bequeath to my friend Spotswood Garland my Negro Woman Sarah which I had devised to my Daughter Anne Spencer and my Negro Boy Simon, together with such property as would have fallen to my Daughter Elizabeth Thompson by my will after the death of my wife, to be holden by him and his heirs forever upon Trust. However and for the special purpose herein after mentioned, Viz., that the said Spotswood Garland and his heirs shall allow my said daughter Elizabeth Thompson and her children to have the use and benefit of said property during the lifetime of my said Daughter Elizabeth and after her death it is my desire that the said property with its increase shall be held and enjoyed by the children of my said daughter Elizabeth in equal proportions to them and their heirs forever.
"I give and bequeath to my Daughter Anne Spencer in lieu of the Negro woman Sarah formerly devised to her my Negro woman Hannah, to her and her heirs forever.
"Whereas my son James Stevens Junr hath purchased the land which were devised in my will to my daughter Behetheland Penn and hath paid for the same, I do therefore give and bequeath the said land containing one hundred and fifty acres to my said son James Stevens Jr and to his heirs forever.
"In witness hereof I have hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this twenty fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten.

Could this be the James who signed the marriage bond in Fluvanna Co., Va in March 1784 for Joseph and Jenny Martin Stevens? Did he have a son Joseph Stevens?Joyce Turel is pretty certain that he had no Joseph. Amy Stevens at >[email protected]< in 2009 sent this James's DAR entry:

Notes for BEHETHELAND TALIAFERRO:
In other notes, she is called Behetheland Griffin, possibly a marriage before James.
Mark says:My mother's notes also point to another possible tie between bits of your tree and ours. (ed.: see notes under Samuel R. Daniel) She believed that the parents of Behetheland Spencer Stewart were Samuel Spencer and Ann[e] Stevens (daughter of James Stevens and Behetheland Taliaferro).I don't see parentage for Behetheland Spencer Stewart or children of Behetheland Taliaferro on your web pages.--Mark Ryan Williamson<[email protected]>April 2001
Later I encountered that this is so, at least in the "Pamunkey Neighbors...."work. But it cites James' wife as Behetheland Griffin, not Taliaferro. She might have had another husband. In fact she might be Griffin who married Taliaferro then Stevens.... note their son John Griffin Stevens....
Joyce Turel, a Stevens cousin, kindly sends this:"The 'Beheathland' name is in honor of Robert Beheathland, gentleman, who accompanied Captain John Smith to Virginia in 1607. Robert, unfortunately, had no male heirs, so his name has been kept alive by his female descendants for almost 400 years in America."
I (the editor) am related to her through both my mother's Marshalls and Berrymans and through the Stevens and the Stewart connections...Her children are named in her husband's will.
This interesting note byMary E. Stewart, <[email protected]>, in the TALIAFERRO TIMES, Volume I, December 18, 1996, on the web:
"I have struggled for a long time trying to discover the identity of 'my' Taliaferro to no avail. I hope the group will be able to shed some light on this mystery.
"My mystery person is Beheathland Taliaferro, wife of James Stevens, Sr. of Caroline and Amherst/Nelson counties. I do not have documented evidence of her identity; however, I believe that she is the Beheathland born 20 Aug1738, daughter of Richard Taliaferro and Rose Berryman (this daughter is not followed in any of the published Taliaferro stuff that I've seen).
"James Stevens, Sr. was born (probably) in Caroline Co. about 1735. In 1769 he bought land in Amherst Co. (the part that later became Nelson Co.). James and his wife Behethland sold the same land in 1774. James also names his wife Beheathland in his will probated 22 Nov 1813, Nelson Co. I find no official record which names her as "Beheathland Taliaferro." There is a collection of family group sheets and notes on this family at the Jones Library in Lynchburg. In them is a letter saying that she was "Miss Taliaferro" and "we all know that, of course"(thanks a lot!). Taliaferro does appear frequently as a middle name in her descendants and her great-granddaughter (my 2g grandmother) was Behetherland Taliaferro Stevens.
"By working back from the marriage dates of their children, I estimate that James and Beheathland were married about 1755-60 in Caroline Co. I think she was the daughter of Richard and Rose Berryman Taliaferro because of the apparently close relationship that James had with her brother, Zachariah (who m. 1 Mary Boutwell). They appear as witnesses on one another's deeds several times. It seems at least plausible that a man would marry his friend's sister.I'm glad to share what I have."
