Notes for DOROTHY STEPHENS:

Dorothy was the only daughter of Joseph and Jane Stephens. Her father dead the same year as Dorothy was born in 1829 so she never new her father. Dorothy lived in Sedgeberrow with her mother who remarried and become Jane Spires. Dorothy marred Martin Westmacott in 1852 and the 1861 Census shows that Dorothy had 4 children.

John Stephens was born in Sedgeberrow and was the eldest son of Joseph and Jane Stephens. It is believed that Johns father dead in about 1829 and that John was brought up by his Uncle and Aunt on his mothers side in Sedgeberrow. he marred Sarah Pugh in 1849 and lived in Sedgeberrow working as a agricultural work till his death in 1871 at the age of 43.

John and Sarah Stephens where married at St Mary's church Sedgeberrow in 1849. they where living in Alderton Gloucestershire with their first son Joseph Stephens in 1861. By 1861 the family had moved back to Sedgeberrow and by 1871 John and Sarah family had grown to 10 children,. one of which had dead as an Infant. John dead in 1871 at the age of 43 and his wife Sarah dead two years later in 1873. after the death of the parents the family broke up and left Sedgeberrow.

Joseph was the eldest son of John and Sarah Stephens. Joseph attended the Sedgeberrow C of E school up to the age of 12. At the age of 13 he started work as a plough boy with is Farther. He was still living with has parents at the age of 22 and working as a farm labour in 1871. After his Fathers death in 1871 and his Mothers death in 1873 he seems to have left the Sedgeberrow district, No records have been found of where he moved to after 1873.

Elizabeth was the second eldest daughter of John and Sarah Stephens. Elizabeth attended the Sedgeberrow C of E school to the age of 12 where by she started work as a Glover the same as her Mother. After 1873 bother Elizabeth’s parents had died. She moved to her step aunt and uncle’s home in Aston Birmingham where the records show she staid

 

As far as we can tell Elizabeth never marred and she remained a spinster.

Jane  was the second youngest daughter of John and Sarah Stephens. Jane like the rest of her brothers and sisters  attended the Sedgeberrow C of E school up to the age of 12. At the age of 13 she started work as a Glover the same as her Mother. . After her Fathers death in 1871 and his Mothers death in 1873 there seems to be no further record of her life.

It is believed that after 1873 she marred and changed her surname, but record exists of her marriage in the Parish of Sedgeberrow.

Notes for MARY ANN (CASSIE):

Mary Ann was the forth youngest daughter of John and Sarah Stephens. Mary Ann  attended the Sedgeberrow C of E school up to the age of 12. At the age of 13 she started work as a Glover the same as her Mother. We have no record of Mary Ann after 1873 when both her parents had died.  The records have show that in 1875 Mary Ann Married Ralph Cassie.

Ralph was a professional chemist and both Mary Ann and Ralph lived in Romford Essex for some time. By 1901 they had moved  to Wandsworth London where they had four children and employed  a cook and a full time nurse  as domestic servant..

Robert was the third eldest son of John and Sarah Stephens. Robert was 7 when his Mother and farther dead in 1871 and 1873. which made Robert an orphan. There is no record on who took Robert in after his parents death, but Robert at the age of 18 had a job as a Coal Miner at Cannock Staffordshire

Where he had Lodgings with Ann and John Edge of Cannock.

There is no record on who took Richard in after his parents death, but Richard at the age of 16 in 1881 had a job as a Apprentice To a Learn Butchering at 47 Bridge St Evesham, Worcestershire.

12.  WILLIAM4 STEPHENS (JOHN3, JOSEPH2, THOMAS1) was born 11 Apr 1861 in Sedgeberrow.  He married SARAH E (EDWARD).  She was born 1862 in London City of Middlesex.

 

Notes for WILLIAM STEPHENS:

William was the second eldest son of John and Sarah Stephens. William was 10 when his Mother and farther dead in 1871 and 1873. which made William an orphan. There is no record to who took William in after his parents death, but William at the age of 20 had a job as a Second Boots man at the Imperial Hotel Station Yard, Stroud, Gloucestershire. He met Sarah Edward a Housemaid at the same Hotel and married her (date not known).

They had moved to 29 Price Street Warrington Lancashire by 1891 where William had a job as a Coshman. They had one son also called William.

There has been no record find at the moment on when William dead.

13.  JAMES4 STEPHENS (JOHN3, JOSEPH2, THOMAS1) was born 30 Jun 1867 in Sedgeberrow, and died 1921 in Childswickham.  He married EMMA.  She was born 1874 in Ombersley, and died 1955 in Childswickham.

 

Notes for JAMES STEPHENS:

James was the fifth eldest son of John and Sarah Stephens. James was only 3 when his farther dead in 1871. His Mother Sarah dead in 1873 which meant that after the family broke up, James become an orphan at the age of 6. He was taken in by James and Mary Ann Grove and at the age of 13,  he was a helper to James Grove a Cemetery Curators.

By 1891 James had moved in to loggings with has younger bother Garage Stephens, at Evesham

In about 1894 James marred Emma at Ombersley and moved to Childswickham where he opened a business as a mason.

James live in Childwickham till his death in 1921.

 

 

Notes for EMMA:

Born at Ombersley, After James dead in 1921 she lived at Sythchampton for 30 years, moved to Evesham and later took a shop in Checketts Lane, Worcester.

Notes for GEORGE STEPHENS:

George was the youngest son of John and Sarah Stephens. George was only 1 when his farther dead in 1871. His Mother Sarah dead in 1873 which meant that after the family broke up, George become an orphan at the age of 4 and he entered the New Orphan Houses Orphanage in 1873.

 George left the Orphanage at the age of 12 and went to work as a Railway Goods carrier. He was in Loggings with James Stephens at 23 Cheatham Street Birmingham in March 1891 at the age of 21.

George was working  as a Bridle Cutter in 1901 at the age of 31 in Walsall Birmingham where he Married Myra in 1894 and they had 1 son Frank Stephens. There is no information at this time on the death of George

Notes for JOHN RICHARD STEPHENS:

John was the eldest son of John Richard and Nora Stephens. He lived in his early years at Knowlewood Road Dorriage, and attended Bentley Heath school from about 1927 with his younger sister and brother, Molly and Raymond Stephens. After leaving school he started work as a domestic Gardener and he was still living at home when the  Family moved to 23 DarleyGreen Knowle in about 1938. after the out brake of world war two in 1941 he enlisted into the Royal air Force and worked runways at air force basic through French, Holland and finally Germany. He left the air force in June 1946 and returned to his job as a gardener.

John loved to go to the pictures and it was there that he met Kathleen Cross, after their engagement they where marred at Knowle Parish Church on 22 July 1950. Their honeymoon was at Llandudno in Wales.    

John and Kathleen moved into a prefab in Lode Lane Solihull after their wedding and four years later moved to 1618 High Street Knowle. They had two children. Philip John Stephens in 1955 and Peter Fredrick Stephens in 1960.

 

John was working for a privet family as a domestic gardener till he was made redundant in 1963. He obtained a gardening job in the gardening department of Solihull County Council and retained this job till his retirement. Redevelopment of the centre of Knowle meant that the family had to move to Shirley in 1967 and they stayed in Shirley till 1968 when the family moved to 68 Slater Road Bentley Heath. John always used a bicycle to get around having never taken a driving test for a car and he always visited his parents in DarleyGreen and his Sisters in Bentley heath every week a round trip of some 20 miles on top of riding to work each day no mater what the whether.

After the Children left home in the 70’s John and Kathleen moved into a flat an 39 Dassett Road Bentley Heath where he live till his death in 2006
