The following extract explains how a new avenue of research has opened-up…

"In the 1881 census, Hannah describes her birth-place as Longton. In fact, it seems highly probable that her birth was in Checkley. Through contact with David Tideswell, who is the 3x Great Grandson of a William Tideswell, born in Checkley who it seemed could be Hannah's brother,I have learned that the Tideswell family moved from Checkley to Longton around about the time of Hannah's birth.

"At the time of the 1901 census, Hannah was a widow living with her Grand-daughter, Harriet Louisa and her husband (although Hannah's relationship to the head of the family, Robert James, was described as "Grand Mother"). In the 1901 census, she described her birth-place as Alton.

"Some "detective work" was necessary to establish the above facts...

"In the 1881 census, my Hannah Emberton (née Tideswell) said she was 48 and born in Longton. She had an unmarried daughter, Elizabeth, aged 28, and another "daughter" Harriet Louisa - 20 years younger.

"I looked for Hannah Emberton in the 1901 census, and found someone who could be her living at the home of Robert James and his wife Harriet. She (Hannah) was described as Grandmother to the Head of the family. This Hannah said she was 68, and born in Alton, which I believe is very near to Checkley.

"I wondered whether Harriet could be her Grand-daughter by Elizabeth (who, in the 1881 census, also appeared to have a 2 year old illegitimate son - Joseph). So I looked for a marriage of Robert James to a Harriet and found one in the Stone register for Dec 1893. I cross-checked for a marriage of Harriet to Robert James in the same register - and came up with Harriet Louisa E. Hill.

"The birth of a Harriet Louisa H. Emberton was registered in Stoke in the June 1873 register. It seems very likely that the H in this instance was for Hill, and the E in Louisa Hill's marriage was for Emberton - presumably a means of denoting the parents were unmarried.

"Having firmly established that the Hannah Emberton in the 1901 census was my Hannah, I am pretty convinced that, as on this occasion, she described her birth-place as Alton, that she is also the Hannah Tideswell who was David Tideswell's 3x Grandfather's sister."
