Notes for Jonas Arthur Shilling:
Jonas Shilling married Mary Williams, a miner's daughter from down Barr Street (Blind Isaac). They had 6 or 8 children, each one had a nickname. The one I knew best was Maurice who was called "Snocks". We met guite often, after the war at Aunt Myrtle's. He seemedmuch like his father, quiet and unassuming. Like Jonashe had been a mechanic and machinist and operated a small machine shop
in his garage and after he retired.
Jonas's head was always tilted well to the left and he was unable to look to either side without turning his whole body. As a child he had contracted Typhoid Fever and while asleep in the Massillon hospital someone let the fire go out for several hours. His neck remained "frozen" in that position for the reminder od his life....Today, lawyers would be lined up to take his case, but at that time, it was considered " just one of those breaks".
He had been a partner in a Ford agency and tire store in Massillon. However, in the late 20's, Ford suspended production while tooling up for the Model "A"... Jonas was caught up in the squeeze and eventually, moved thewhole family to Texas. He and most of the family moved back to Massillon shortly before hee died.
