A letter dated 10-31-1940, sent to George's neice, Sarah J. Koger.
Dear Neice,
I must try and answer your letter you wrote me some time since i think I wrote you once before but I will tell you that I am still living.My creator has permitted me to live out my three score and 10 years and is still giving me life.I was one hundred years old the second day of last July.
Born in Overton, Tenn, jusly 2nd, 1840.Lived in Tennessee till the civil war, then volunteered and served the First Tennessee Infantry nearly 2 years as 1st seargant and I have outlived all my comrades excect for one that I know, Poke Zachery, living down about Birch Town, Tennessee is still living.I don't know of any other.I am now living at Inman, VA with my son, Jemuel.
Since my wife died she is buried at somerset.So is one of my boys oldest boy is buired at Cincinati one of my brothers buried in Kentucky.Another one, Austin got struck with lightning and is buried samewhere in Tennessee.Me and my sister, Susy is all of our family that is living, I am the oldest and she the youngest.
I can still get around the house without a stick, but beetter with one and I thank my good lord for all of his blessings and I send my love and regards to you all our loved ones and wish you all a long life and a happy one and hope to meet you all in jeaven above where all is peace adn love and hoping to hear from you soon and often.I add no more at present except all are well so far as I know.
