I have been researching the Stiemsma Family name and have put together this page. I have been able to trace the name back to individuals prior to when the surname "Stiemsma" was first used.

Melis Douwes was born in the late 1600's, married spouse Elske and had 5 children. One of the Sons, Douwe Melis, born 29 Nov 1705 in Anjum was married twice. First to Janke Jacobs then to Trijntje Gerbens. Douwe and Janke were married on 01 Jan 1742 in Anjum and had 8 children.

In the early 1800's, the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte invaded the Netherlands and made it a province of France. He also forced the French laws upon the Dutch.
In one of these laws he made it compulsory to all who lived in the countries that he reigned to have a surname.

I have been able to find that one of the sons, Uilke Douwes chose as his surname STIEMSMA, two of the sons and one of the daughters chose STIEMSTRA, and another son chose DOUMA. This happened in a village called Anjum on December 12th 1811. This name was directly related to the neighborhood were he lived. This neighborhood of 4 or 5 farms was called STIEM.
