Notes for S
IR JOHN DE STANLEIGH, K.G.:
The founder of the family fortunes. In 1385 Sir John Stanley had a grant of the manor of Blake Castle, in Ireland.

Lord of great part of the hundred of West Derby in south-west Lancashire, including Knowsley and Lathom. The famous Stanley crest of the eagle and child, which gave rise a family legend, no doubt came from the Lathams. The estate of Lathom House (near Ormskirk, Lancs) was acquired by Sir John Stanley after his marriage to Isabel, daughter and heir of Sir Thomas Lathom, in 1385. It continued in the Stanley family until it was sold in 1717 by the daughter of the 9th Earl of Derby.

Sir John, who in his youth had served in Aquitaine, went to Ireland as deputy for Richard II's favourite, De vere, in 1386, and subsequently held important posts both there and on the Welsh and Scottish borders. Henry IV rewarded his speedy adhesion with Hope and Mold castles and a regrant (10 Dec. 1399) of his old office in Ireland. But he became officially bankrupt, and in 1401 was superseded. Steward to the household to Henry, price of Wales, from 1403, he entered the order of the Garter in 1405. The king rewarded his services during the northern revolt of that year by a grant, first for life and then, in perpetuity, by the service of a cast of falcons at coronations, of the Isle of Man, which had been forfeited by the rebellion of the Earl of Northumberland. In 1409 Stanley was made constable of Windsor. Henry V once more sent him to govern Ireland, and it was at Ardee, in that island, that he died on 18 January 1414. Stanley built the tower in Water Street, Liverpool, which survived till 1821. His third son, Thomas was the ancestor of the Stanleys of Aldford and Elford. (Source: Dictionery of National Biography)

For his patrimony he was given the old seat of Newton near Macclesfieldm and as a young man, he was an ardent soldier when travels and martial exploits took him all over Europe. Sir John had an exceptional military record, and distinguished himself in tournaments and single combat; such was his fame that knights travelled long journeys just to challenge him.

In 1369, he was charged in the Cheshire Pleas Rolls, together with his elder brother, Sir William Stanley, Head Forrester of Wirral, Sir Ralph de Vernon and others, with having made an attach on Thurstanton Hall. Armed with bows and arrows, they had entered the house and taken possession of it. They were found guilty and fined.

In 1370 he was in Aquitaine, and in 1377 he was sent by Richard II on a mission to Ireland. He returned to England in 1378 when he was accused of killing at Stourton, Thomas de Clothen, a neighbour who was also his second cousin by marriage and part owner of the Manor of Stourton (the ramainder being owned by the Stanley's). He received the king's pardon on this occasion at the request of Sir Thomas Tryvet, Knt. in consideration of the service he had given the king in Aquitaine.
