I know that my grandmother told me that she was born in France and came to this country in 1913.This is a dedication to my grandmother Henrietta Louise(Delattre) Hunter.I do not know what happened to where they left to come to this country.I do know from stories that her father Elisee DeLattre and his wife Virgina (Regina) Marie Laurent desided to bring their two daughters to America.After being in this country for a year Elisee was deported back to France.We never knew what the real reason behind it was.We were told that he was caught doing something illegal. At that point in time it could have possibly been bootlegging, but all we can do is wonder.
When they left France there was already a hint of what was about to happen some twenty years later.There had already been german soldiers in their little town of Lievin.And according to what grandmother was saying up till her passing, she always thought that the germans were taking over the hospital that she was in.But at that time she didnt call them germans, she called them Nazis.
I always wanted to send grandmother back to Lievin, so she could see what her home looked like after all those years.But she said she never wanted to go back.Was it because her father had been sent back there, or was it because of some terrible secret that she knew.She would never talk about it, so I asked once and was told that as a child of 6 years, she was with her aunt and her aunt made her hide in a alley so as not to be seen.As my grandmother watched, she saw her aunt assaulted and murdered.
Now I know why she never wanted to go back, but that was not going to turn me from finding out who my ancestors were.
I've found alot of interesting things as I have been searching; I've found out that I had a gggggrandfather that was the sheriff of Tattnall County, Georgia from 1832 to 1834. That there were at least 3 generations of Colson's that were indian traders. That is on my maternal side.On my paternal side some is still a mystery.But with the information that was sent to me by my new cousin April, I have found some more, including the strange name of my gggrandfather Welcome Friend Blue Cox.As for my main line of Leasure that is still a mystery.I have the name of my ggrandfather but can not find out anything on him, but will keep trying to break down that brick wall.One brick at a time.
